Hello! My name is Vitalick Makockluev.
I like to read books, especially fairy tales. I read a lot of Russian fairy tales and one day I wanted to know if differences between Russian and Scottish fairy tales? So my theme is “Comparative characteristic of Scottish and Russian fairy tales”
Purpose of my work is to compare a Russian fairy tale «Wise Vasilisa» and a Scottish fairy tale “the Prince and the giant’s daughter”
I Studied Russian fairy tale «Wise Vasilisa» and Scottish fairy tale “the Prince and the giant’s daughter”, then analysed their peculiarities and find common and distinguished features these tales. Methods of my research was studying the literature, work with internet recourses and comparison the characteristic of main characters.
The first question is “What is a fairy tale?” Ozhegov dictionary says that fairy tale is a story, usually folk and poetic work about invented persons especially with magic and fantastic force, or simple it is invention.
Appointment of fairy tale is teaching to distinguish good from bad, kind from angry. The fairy tale helps to develop imagination.
Somebody tells the fairy tale and you must imagine what heroes are.
What does fairy tale do?
It teaches us to be strong at the difficult time because the main character always does the most unbelievable tasks.
I knew out that fairy tales can be different types. At first they are stories of animals. It is the most ancient stories. Animals can talk and they act like people.
Others are nursery stories. The characters of these stories are peasants, soldiers, and shoemaker. They live in real world and usually fight with master, priest or general. They are winners, because they are courageous, clever, and witty.
The third tales are fairy tales. Their characters fight with enemies like witches and giants and help their friends. The most of these fairy tales are about searching brides or kidnapping wives.
Structure of these fairy tales has a big size of the text, a topic complication, frequent repetition episode, culmination.
Look at the table of differences and commons. You can see that it is almost equal
parts of differences and commons at the table. For example, in the both tales father gave his son to somebody, who helped him. Only in the Russian tale he is the waterman. But in the Scottish is the giant. So you can see that the culmination of two stories is the same. The main character of two tales forgot everything and decided to marry another girl, but his wife baked two pigeons that reminded him about his wife and promise to remember her. Of course, the end of these tales, the same. The fairy tales have happy ends. There are some miserable differences in the beginning of the stories and differences in running away married people. And you see how end two stories: in Russian tale Ivan and Vasilisa became to live together , saved up their property and tried to avoid misfortune. But in Scottish tale the guests at marry party ate many days and if they didn’t finish, then they eat even now.
Also you can see differences between two angry people: a giant and
a waterman, how they looked.
You see that both girls are wearing the different clothes.
And buildings, that we image when we read tells also different.
Knowing differences and likenesses I can do a conclusion:
Although the fairy tales were written in different countries with different culture they have a lot of commons.
Thank you for your attention.
