Эссе "Нужно ли читать классику"

Classical literature is very important in human life. Many generations of people have been educated by the best literary works. Unfortunately, in modern society the role of literature is constantly reducing. And this is one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century.

In my opinion, books have two main functions: information and aesthetic. First of all, the experience of centuries is passed from generation to generation with the help of books. Secondly, they teach high moral principles. The wisdom, strength and inspiration of classical writers make people be better. According to Gorky, "the purpose of literature is to help the person understand himself, to raise his self-confidence and develop the desire for truth, fight against vulgarity." Books form not only moral ideals, but ideals of appearance and behavior. For example, the image of Turgenev's heroines has become a symbol of beauty, sincerity, tenderness and romance. Today, these personality traits are in high demand in our emancipated society. After all, the book is a universal subconsciously hidden answer to any questions. But nowadays  reading classics becomes less and less popular among youngsters. They consider it boring. Besides, there is a virtual library of electronic devices for finding information so the readership decreases.

To sum up, I feel strongly that reading classics is really necessary because it exercises our minds, improves our personality, develops our imagination. But as a matter of fact, it’s up to you to decide, to read or not.
