Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is located in the Far East of Russia. It’s the center of the region. The population is 190 227 people. It is the sixth big city in Far East. The city is situated in the south-eastern part of Sakhalin Island, on the Susuya River. The climate is moderate.

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk was founded in 1882 by Russia as a place of exile and prison, it was called Vladimirovka. Since 1905 to 1945 it was a part of Japan. In 1946 was renamed as Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk due to its geographical position.

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk was occupied by the Soviet troops and became the center of the region.

At the end of 19 century to the beginning of 20 century Vladimirovka was a typical Russian settlement with individual mostly middle and small households. There was a post, a school, shops and a church.

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is an interesting and beautiful city. It has a picturesque scenery and a lot of beautiful places. The center of our town is Lenin Square. It was founded in 1970. Different parades, wedding ceremonies are held there.

Т he most beautiful building in the town is Sakhalin Regional Museum. It was opened in 1946. The building was created in the ,,Emperor’s style’’ by Japanese architecture. Museums have made valuable collections of 190 000 objects, based natural history, cultures of indigenous people, history and economy of Sakhalin and Kurills. About 80 000 visitors come there every year.

Sakhalin Regional Art Museum. It was opened in 1983. It is one of the youngest museums in Russia. In 1989 museum moved to the building of the former Japanese bank in the center of Y-S. It is considered to be historical and architecture monument. The museum often organizes parties for employees of various companies.

Museum has the collection which includes 7 000 items. There are comprehensive groupings: Russian ancient art, Russian art о f the19 th century, folk decorative art and fine arts of the west.
