Sport in England.

People all over the world are very fond of sports and games. The most popular games in England today are: football, tennis, hockey, golf, horse-racing and so on, that is considered outdoor games. All the year round many English indulge in chess, billiards, cards, table tennis, that firmly established themselves in favour among different people.

To begin with, England is considered to be a sport-loving nation. So sport takes many forms such as organized sports. This form attracts huge crowds to encourage their favourite team to victory. When the number of spectators is greater than the number of players, this sport called spectator sport. Participant sports we can call the kind of sport attracting large crowds on special occasions, for example, tournaments. Generally speaking, various forms of athletics, such as running, boxing, jumping, and swimming are known to be wide-spread in England. To tell the truth, the English weather is not very severe as a rule, people don’t often have the chance of skating, skiing and tobogganing, but winter is considered to be the great time for hunting, provided the ground is not too hard.

Frankly speaking, England turned out to have been the home of sports for centuries, so the British can regard themselves as good sportsmen. This fact that cricket, soccer, rugger, tennis, table tennis, squash, badminton, canoeing and snooker were all invented in Britain seems surprising for me. It is interesting to remark, that the kind of sport such as boxing, golf, hockey, yachting and horse-racing proved to originate from Britain. They say, angling, snooker and darts are considered to be the most popular sports that people take part in rather than watch. This thing that youngsters and grown-ups like to watch and take part in many kinds of sports is touching for many people.

Association football is considered to be very popular. When started in the 19th century, football spread all over the world. Football began as if been a contest between neighboring villages, with no limit to the number on each side, no fixed pitch and almost no riles. The Football Association is known to draw up the rules of the modern games in 1863 and in the 1888 twelve clubs joined together to form the first Football League. Generally speaking, the biggest event in England proved to be the Cup Final played at the Empire Stadium Wembley. Professional football seems interesting to be a big business because the players are bought and sold between clubs. They say England won the World Cup in 1966.

And now, let me say about such kind of sport as rugby. It is played with an oval-shaped ball, which may be carried or thrown. It looks surprising that rugger and football become two separate sports. One of the rules laid down by Football Association was the goalkeepers could handle the ball. Rugby consists from two kinds. Rugby Union is known to be played by amateurs in teams of 15 in the south of England and in Wales. But rugger League is played by professionals in teams of 13 in the north of England. The game is considered to be very touch as there is a lot of pushing. Frankly speaking, players spend much time lying in the mud or on top of each other.

Generally speaking, we can say that sport is considered to be one of the things that makes all people kin. Indeed sport in one form or another forms an essential part of daily life in Britain.
