«ALYOSHA»

In Murmansk, on the hill of Cape Verde, the majestic memorial “To the Defenders of the Soviet Arctic during the Great Patriotic War” rises. And in the people it is called - "Alyosha". A large-scale monument is installed at the highest point above the Kola Bay. From this place, “Alyosha” looks into the distance, into the Valley of Glory, where bloody battles with fascist invaders took place almost eight decades ago. Glimpses of the flame of the Eternal flame fall next to the figure of Alyosha, next to which is a stele of granite. On it you can read the names of all formations that stood on the defense of Murmansk and the entire peninsula. These are border guards, foot soldiers, pilots, sailors, and partisans. The construction of Alyosha lasted for 5 years, it began on October 17, 1969, and ended on October 19, 1974. The monument was inaugurated for the 30th anniversary of the defeat of fascist troops in the Arctic.At that time, monuments and memorials were created across the country in honor of the heroes who defeated fascism in the terrible war. They were erected in honor of the living defenders of the Fatherland and to perpetuate the dead. Besides, two capsules were walled up at the base of the memorial complex: one with a handful of earth from the Valley of Glory, and the second was filled with seawater from the site of the death of the Tuman patrol ship. At the foot of the monument, there are always many flowers. They are laid by the grateful inhabitants of the Arctic who do not forget what price the Soviet people paid for a peaceful and happy childhood, for saving the planet from the madness of fascist youths. “Our Alyosha!” - Murmansk residents say affectionately and proudly. From here, from a hill, a magnificent panoramic view of the bay and the northern city opens. "Alyosha" as if guarding them, peering from a height peering into the distance.
