Tasiro – Cat IslandСлайд 2
Tasiro is a small Japanese island in the Pacific Ocean. It’s located west of the Osika Peninsula. There are two villages on the island: Odomari and Nitoda , each of which has its own fishing port. There are no snowfalls on the island due to the warm Kurosio current affecting the climate so the main activity of the inhabitants of the island is tourism.

In the center of the island there is a small shrine known as Neko-jinja , dedicated to the deity of cats. Since ancient times, cats have been revered on Tasiro Island due to the fact that they exterminated rats, which greatly interfered with local silk production. Currently, the number of feral cats on the island significantly exceeds the local population (70-100 people), which is declining due to the fact that the entire young population has left Tasiro . The average age of the island's inhabitants is 71 years.

Nowadays, about 500 cats of different breeds and colors live on the island. The cat population mainly consists of crossbreeds and mixed—breed cats, and one separate breed is often found on the island - the Japanese bobtail. Every two months, a veterinarian comes to the island to examine the village cats. In Japanese culture, it is believed that cats bring money and good luck.
