Slide 3. The History of the House
The construction of the original building of Peter’s House started on the 4th of June in 1703. Peter the Great himself chose the location of the house. It took only three days to create this house. Originally it was called «The Palace» or «The Red Mansions». The great tsar lived here only in summer time till 1708. The house was rather small and had only three rooms: a study, a bedroom and a dining room. After Peter’s death nobody has lived in this house. Nowadays the house hosts a museum.
Slide 4. Peter’s outfit and his cane.
On the wall of Peter’s bedroom there is a cast-iron print of his palm. In 1707, in the Russian tsar visited the iron foundries in Lipetsk and the workers made the emperor a print of his palm as a souvenir. Despite the tsar’s enormous height, his hands were rather small. Next to the washbasin in the bedroom Peter’s uniform can be seen, as well as his personal cane of oriental work. At that time the tsar wore the Bomber Uniform of Preobrazhenskiy Regiment.
Slide 5. A sailing boat (Vereika)
The sailing boat was built by Peter himself at the beginning of the 18th century. The Vereika boat is lined with pine. The tsar sailed this boat on the Neva River during his stay in the Red Mansions. After Peter’s death the Vereika was installed in Peter’s House and it is regularly restored.
Slide 6. The smoking pipe of the Russian tsar
This authentic pipe is a personal thing of Peter the Great. It is a gift from Alexander Menshikov. The tsar was a keen smoker and he brought a new smoking pipe from every country he travelled to.
Slide 7. The armchair of Peter the Great
Peter I was a great carpenter. To prove this, there is an armchair in the study made by himself from a pear tree. A leather cushion is attached to the seat of the armchair.
Slide 8. The memorable medal
At the beginning of the 18th century people in Russia started to mint medals dedicated to the most memorable events. Peter the Great often invented images and inscriptions for them. This medal is devoted to the foundation of St Petersburg.
You have a great opportunity to see these and other exhibits in this wonderful museum. I strongly recommend to visit this site one day.
