2. Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night and Fireworks Night, is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, primarily in Great Britain, involving bonfires and fireworks displays.
How is Bonfire Night celebrated today?
On 5 November, people remember the plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament by celebrating 'Bonfire Night'. All over Britain there are firework displays and bonfires with models of Guy Fawkes, which are burned on the fire. The Guy is made of old clothes and the clothes are filled with newspaper.
3. Pancake Tuesday is celebrated all over Ireland and in the UK too. In South America, Pancake Tuesday is called Mardi Gras – 'Fat Tuesday', which has the same religious connotations. Lent is still observed in Ireland, but rather than complete fasting, many choose to use the time to give up something they really enjoy. It is often celebrated in public town squares, local parks and in the family home, meaning everyone can enjoy it. There's plenty of dressing up too as well as a singing and dancing, and children are encouraged to ask for pancakes and money, a lot like trick or treating at Halloween.
4. May Day, in medieval and modern Europe, holiday (May 1) for the celebration of the return of spring. The observance probably originated in ancient agricultural rituals, and the Greeks and Romans held such festivals.
