A bit from history On December 27, 1933 working village Zvanka received the status of a town and was given the name Volkhov .

Volkhov hydroelectric plant The town was founded owing to the construction of the Volkhov hydroelectric plant, which was built from 1918 to 1926 and was the first major hydroelectric power station in Russia .

Volkhov aluminum plant In 1929 Russia's first aluminum plant was founded in Volkhov . Today it is still one of the most productive plants of its kind in Russia.

Volkhov history museum On October 3, 1969 Volkhov history museum was opened for visitors. Nowadays it has a great collection of various exhibits reflecting the development of the town and the county as well.

Genrikh Osipovich Graftio (December 26, 1869, Dvinsk - April 30, 1949, Leningrad) one of the founders of the GOELRO plan used to live in this house in 1930s. There are many of his personal things in the museum.

Volkhov in the Great Patriotic war During the Great Patriotic war (1941-1945) Volkhov showed a heroic resistance against the Nazis. It was a vital part of the « Road of Life ». Alexander Lukyanov became a hero of the USSR. He died protecting the sky of Volkhov and is buried in the town.

The awards Volkhov was awarded with the Order of the October Revolution in 1970 for « services furthering communism and the state and in enhancing the defences of the Soviet Union »

Nowadays Today Volkhov is a little town. It has a short but glorious history. Great soviet buildings, the fire of war and working giants became its symbols. It is really worth seeing and admiring!

basic information Vyborg was founded in the Middle Ages by the Swedes. Until 1940 it was the second largest town in Finland.

m onuments Torkel Knutsson monument is a monument to the founder of the Vyborg Castle Swedish marshal Torkel Knutsson by the sculptor Ville Vallgrena (1855-1940) in Vyborg. The sculpture was damaged heavily, but it was not destroyed. In 1993 the monument was restored.

Swedish period In 1293 during one of the Crusades by the Karelians there was based a strong castle, called Vyborg. It has become a reliable outpost of the Swedish spread on the land of the Karelian Isthmus, remaining inaccessible to 1710.

Russian period In 1719 Vyborg and Kexholm County were United in the Vyborg district of St. Petersburg province. It officially became a part of the Russian Empire by the peace Treaty of Nystad in 1721.

Finnish period In January 1918 in the Finnish civil war began, and Vyborg became one of the main centers of the red Finns .

Soviet period The Second World War brought huge damage to the town. More than 500 residential buildings, educational and medical institutions were destroyed. But in 1960s-1980s the town developed very fast and grew in a modern way.

contemporary period In the 1990s many urban enterprises stopped due to the bankruptcy, but at the same time many new private firms and enterprises with abroad investment were started. Now it is a modern town in Russia.
