When my teacher asked me whom I consider as a legend of century, I answered Margaret Thatcher and in this presentation I want to tell you about the woman who made a huge contribution to development of Great Britain

Margaret Thatcher (Margaret Robins) was born on the 13 th of October in 1925 in Grantham, Lincolnshire. Her father was Alfred Roberts, originally from Northamptonshire , and her mother was Beatrice Ethel (née Stephenson) from Lincolnshire.

Margaret was a good student and won a scholarship to Oxford to study chemistry. She became President of the Oxford University Conservative Association in 1946. She was influenced at university by political works such as Friedrich von Hayek’s The Road to Serfdom (1944), which condemned economic intervention by government as a precursor to an authoritarian state. After graduating, Roberts moved to Colchester in Essex to work as a research chemist for BX Plastics .

Then she worked as a research chemist until she met and married Denis Thatcher, a successful businessman.

She was elected to Parliament as a Conservative in 1959. In 1970 she became Secretary of State for education and science. The Conservative party elected her its first woman leader in 1975. Thatcher led the Conservatives to an electoral victory in 1979 and became prime minister.

Margaret Thatcher was Great Britain's first woman prime minister and served longer that any other British prime minister in the 20th century; she was famous for her « strong arm policy »

She tried to reduce the influence of trade unions and fight inflation; she reduced government spending and taxes for higher income individuals.

Her government privatised national industries and forced coal miners to return to work after a year on strike.

She refused to support a common European currency and integrated economic policy, and had to resign as prime minister.
