England is one of the most interesting countries for visiting. Every year millions of tourists visit it for different reasons. Some want to study English there, some to visit their friends or relatives, but the majority arrives to discover numerous English attractions. The country is full of sights indeed. There are architectural, natural, cultural, historic and other types of sights.
However, nowadays there are so many tourists in England that all sights are filled with people, so it is difficult to get pleasure from visiting of different places. Therefore, our group has come up to the decision to choose the most unusual sights of England for studying and further presentation, which tourists do not know.
From the abovementioned, we have realized that this project is actual, because nowadays all people like to travel and to visit different touristic attractions, however, there are crowds of people there, so we have decided to find out interesting but not very popular attractions in England.
Thus the aim of the project is to find out interesting but not very popular touristic attractions and to create a map with these attractions to make the trip of future tourists easier.
Therefore as an object of the Project we have chosen unusual English tourist attractions, whereas the subject of the Project is the test and information about English attractions.
A lot of tasks were set in our work:
Furthermore, we intend to provide you with the methods of achieving the aim:
We were interested in touristic attractions and have decided that our project will be useful to other interested students because we have picked up the best and the most interesting material. This information will be useful not only for our classmates, but also for curious pupils of different ages.
THE MAIN PART.
2.1 TOURISM IN PLACES OF INTEREST IN ENGLAND.
England is the largest country in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and borders Wales to the West and Scotland to the North. The English Channel and the North Sea separates England from Europe and the Irish Sea separates England from Ireland.
Starting with the Roman invasion in the 1st century, England has a long and rich history that includes a long line of kings and queens and numerous battles. Tourists to England will enjoy different sights such as The Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral, Stonehenge, Hadrian's Wall and many prehistoric sights.
Numerous cities of interest include London - the capital of England, Bath, a World Heritage city - featuring the ancient Roman Baths and Royal Crescent; Oxford - famed for its university and the Bridge of Sighs; Cambridge - featuring many attractions and a world-famous university; Salisbury - with the breathtaking Salisbury Cathedral, Old Sarum Castle and Old Wardour Castle; Liverpool - now classed as a World Heritage city; York - with York Cathedral and Castle Howard; Leeds - featuring Harewood House; Brighton - including the Brighton Royal Pavilion and much more.
Therefore, it is an open secret that tourism plays a very important role in the economic life of England.
Places to visit in England are endless and there is something to suit everyone with blue flag beaches, national parks, theme parks, sporting venues, walking trails, museums, landmarks, monuments, festivals, carnivals and quality shopping, including the acclaimed Harrods department store in London's Knightsbridge area.
The most popular touristic attractions according to the World’s Society of Tourists in England are: Bristol County - Cambridgeshire - Cheshire - Cornwall - County Durham - Cumbria - Derbyshire - Devon - Dorset - East Riding of Yorkshire - East Sussex - Gloucestershire - Greater London - Greater Manchester - Hampshire - Kent - Lancashire - Leicestershire - Lincolnshire - Merseyside - Norfolk - North Yorkshire - Nottinghamshire - Oxfordshire - Somerset - South Yorkshire - Staffordshire - Suffolk - Tyne and Wear - Warwickshire - West Midlands - West Yorkshire - Wiltshire – Worcestershire.
Other places in England are also of touristiv interest. For example, the city of Manchester is the second most visited city by foreign tourists in England after London (in a survey from 2002). Many foreign tourists also visit the neighbouring countries, Scotland and Wales.
So these places are very popular with tourists from different countries. Everybody wants to visit England with all its places of interest.
3. UNUSUAL PLACES TO VISIT IN ENGLAND.
3.1 THE PICADILLY CIRCUS AND THE THEATRE.
Many Londoners agree that the center of London is located at Piccadilly Circus. Piccadilly Circus has appeared in London in 1819 and soon gained fame as the most bustling and never sleeping area.
The area is the historic center of London and is located at the intersection of four major shopping streets - Regent, Shaftesbury Avenue, Piccadilly and Covent. However, if we turn to the left of the street, we will find an unusual but interesting place of the theatre Criterion.
About the theatre Criterion.
Criterion Theatre is considered one of the oldest theatres in the West end. The popular and unique theatre Criterion is located in the heart of London in Westminster, on the lively Piccadilly circus. An elegant underground theatre was opened in 1874. This classic small theater, preserved to the present day, can officially accommodate up to 588 people.
Its small size made it an ideal theatre for comedies and small plays, with a strong tradition of variety shows and musical performances. The founders managed to keep the building in the same form in which it was originally built. Currently, the auditorium is undergoing renovation works to upgrade seats. Due to this, visitors will be more comfortable to watch the performances.
From the very beginning, the theater was designed as a Criterion entertainment complex. It was supposed to have a restaurant, a concert hall and a stage. The exterior of the building is distinctly influenced by The French Renaissance, thanks to the Portland stone finish. At first, the theater was not very popular. This was because the stage below ground level could only be illuminated by gas lamps, and this method was considered unsafe.
Do not miss the opportunity to visit this place without crowds of people!
3.2 RYE TOWN.
Rye town is an ancient, port town lined with half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and curious little shops. One of the original Cinque Ports, Rye was once a fort almost totally surrounded by the sea. Indeed, the Rye town is really one of the seven wonders of England!
This town is very interesting. There is a Mermaid Street here. We can visit The Mermaid Inn here, which was founded in the 11th century but rebuilt in 1420 after one of the French attacks, which burnt the town to the ground in 1377. The Mermaid Inn, is the largest medieval building, in other words and old house which is simply called, 'The House Opposite'.
Turn to the left of the Mermaid Street and you are into the West Street, where you'll see the former home of Henry James which was partially blasted in WWII but has now been converted into a museum. Head down the road and you'll find yourself in Church Square with the 12th century St. Mary's Church boasting the oldest, church turret clock in the country. Just round the corner is the Rye Castle Museum housed in the 13th century, Ypres Tower. From here you'll see canons which once pointed out to sea but now look onto some peaceful countryside.
You'll find yourself wanting to visit every centimeter of the town with its fantastic tea rooms, cozy restaurants and antique shops. The more energetic will prefer a trip to the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve which is home to Camber Castle and a large, variety of fauna and flora.
So, as we realize, Rye is one of the prettiest villages in England's Southeast. It's the sort of place that visitors do not know, but if they visit it occasionally will never leave! Its high street is lined with such tourist magnets as art galleries, antique shops, twee little tea shops, and craft shops. We dream to visit this very beautiful town, and you?
3.3 BAKER STREET.
Let us continue our trip for unusual places of England and pay our attention to 221B Baker Street. It is the London address of the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, created by author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Baker Street is in the Marylebone district of the City of Westminster in London. In the United Kingdom, postal addresses with a number followed by a letter may indicate a separate address within a larger, often residential building. Baker Street in the late 19th century was a high-class residential district, and Holmes' apartment would probably have been part of a Georgian terrace. Baker Street is named after builder William Baker, who laid out the street in 18 century.
At the time the Holmes stories were published, addresses in Baker Street did not go as high as 221. Baker Street was later rebuilt, and in 1932 people could visit 219–229 Baker Street houses. For many years, Abbey National employed a full-time secretary to answer mail addressed to Sherlock Holmes. In 1990, a blue plaque signifying 221B Baker Street was installed at the Sherlock Holmes Museum, which is very popular among Conan Doyle’s readers.
This interesting museum displays exhibits in period rooms, wax figures and Holmes memorabilia, with the famous study overlooking Baker Street the highlight of the museum. The description of the house can be found throughout the stories, including the 17 steps leading from the ground-floor hallway to the first-floor study. 221B Baker Street" was a suite of rooms on the first floor of a lodging house above a flight of 17 steps.
This place is really very interesting to visit, however not every tourist knows about it!
3.4 THE PLATFORM 9 ¾.
Harry Potter has really conquered the world! This wizard boy with a kind heart killed Volan de Mort and won the love of people from all over the world.
As any fan of J.K. Rowling’s bestselling series will know, King’s Cross is where students of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry catch the Hogwarts Express.
In the wizarding world, Harry and his friends get to the platform by dashing through a brick wall between platforms 9 and 10. Meanwhile, in the real King’s Cross, platforms 9 and 10 are separated by tracks, but you can find a platform 9¾ on the wall in the station concourse.
Look out for a luggage trolley embedded in the wall, and you can pretend you are off to start your magical school journey. The trolley is accessible at all hours, and you don’t have to pay to take your own photographs. You can have a professional photograph taken with a scarf in your house colours, which is then available for you to view and purchase inside the Harry Potter shop next door. The professional photographer is on hand between 9am and 9pm daily. Queues for the trolley can get busy during school holidays and festive periods – visit early to make sure you’re one of the first in line!
3.5 THE LEEDS CASTLE OF KENT.
If tou want to visit a castle in England-the best place without crowds of tourists is the Leeds castle of Kent. Leeds Castle is a castle in Kent, England, 5 miles (8 km) southeast of Maidstone. It is built on islands in a lake formed by the River Len to the east of the village of Leeds. Its rich history is remarkable.
The History of the Castle.
The name of the castle (Esledes) comes from its first owner, Lida or Lidiana, who in 857 built a wooden fortification on this place. It was first mentioned at the end of the 11th century, when, during a land census, data about Leeds and its inhabitants entered the Doomsday Book. In 1119 a stone castle was erected on the lake island by Robert de Crewecker.
In 1278, he was significantly rebuilt by Edward Long-legged for his first wife, Eleanor of Castile. A triple Barbican was built, each part of it had its own entrance, a drawbridge, a gate and Gersu. Until 1318, the castle was part of the widow’s share of the queens of England; the second wife of King Margaret of France lived there for a long time. Upon the death of the stepmother, Edward II traded Leeds to Edderley estate in Shropshire, owned by Lord Bartholomew Badlesmere. In 1926, Leeds acquired Lady Olive Bailey, and, hiring the best interior designers, completely transformed the interior of the castle. Architect Armand-Albert Rato was engaged in both external changes and interior decoration, for example, was built oak staircase in the style of the XVI century. Later in Leeds worked as a Parisian decorator Stefan Boudin. Thanks to Lady Bailey, collections of furniture, ceramics, tapestries, paintings and Chinese porcelain of the 18th century are collected in the castle. The Queen’s Bedroom and the Bathroom were reconstructed - these rooms were restored to the appearance of the chambers of the early 15th century, when Catherine Valois, Henry V’s wife, often visited the castle.
Since those times the Castle celebrates its 900th anniversary and is really a remarkable place!
4. THE EXPERIMENTAL PART.
THE SURVEY AMONG THE PUPILS OF THE 5V.
For us to understand the attitude of pupils towards British places of interest and most popular tourist attractions, we have decided to hold the survey among the pupils of our class. We asked 25 students to answer the following question “What places of interest of Great Britain can you name?” :

1) Looking at the results of the first question we may draw a conclusion, that our classmates know a lot of places of interest of Great Britain: Big Ben, Trafalgar Square and the Tower of London - are the most popular answers.
2) As for the second question we can say precisely, that all the places of interest from our list are very popular among our students.
3) However, the majority of our classmates do not know anything about other places of interest of England. Thus our project will help them to expand their knowledge on the subject.
The Results of the Survey:
Having analyzed the results of the survey, we have come to the conclusion that most of pupils, who want to visit England one day, even do not know anything about the places of interest presented in our research.
The most interesting attraction for pupils is Platform 9 ¾ because practically everybody loves Harry Potter.
We believe, the product of our project will contribute both to school life (pupils interested in English geography, history and places of interest) and students who want to visit England in the nearest future to determine the place of visit.
4. THE CONCLUSION
Nowadays tourism has become one of the most popular hobbies among people of all ages. England - as the main English speaking country is filled with tourists every year. England's long history and interesting culture, spread worldwide through the English language and colonialism, make it (and especially London) a popular tourist destination.
Thus, it is difficult for a traveler to get pleasure from visiting of different places because of crowds of people. Therefore, our group has come up to the decision to choose the most unusual sights of England for studying and further presentation, which tourists do not know.
We have found out the information about very interesting and unusual sights of England, which are not very popular with tourists, presented to you and created a map for the future traveler with these destinations.
We believe that every person learning English should visit this country one day and the product and the information of our project will definitely help them!
