"The Ransom of Red Chief"

Johnny’s friend: Alice

Dasha:  Good day , children. I am glad to see you .Today we will speak about                 books. We all have books. We use books at school and at home. A book is our good friend. We have to care about books. Do you like to read books? Do you know foreign writers?

Snezhana: Books are full of many things

                   That I would like to know

                   Books are full of greatest men

                   That lived long long ago.

Today we will speak about   the greatest   American writer  О. Henry.  It is not his real name. Its   nickname. The real name is William Sidny Porter.

 Dasha: He was born in 1862 in the North Caroline. Now you will see a story of this                           writer « The kidnapping of Red Chief»

Alice: Hi, I am Johnny’s friend, Peter. And this is his  father old Mr. Dorset. Now you can see 2 strange men. Hi, Johnny! We hope you’ll like our story.

                                                          Scene1

 Bill: Hey, little boy, would you like to go with us?

(Билл схватил ребёнка и потащил за собой. Ребёнок сопротивлялся, но Биллу удалось  его схватить) Сидит Билл с пластырем на лице и руках. Ребёнок сидит недалеко, в волосах – раскрашенные страус иные перья. Билл приближается к нему; ребёнок берёт палку:

    R.Ch: Ha! You, wicked pale face! Do you dare to enter the camp of Red Chief?

    Bill: (осматривает свои раны) we’re playing Indian. He is Red Chief and Iam his   prisoner. Tomorrow at sunrise he is going to scalp me. (с презрением) He can kick hard!

  Sam: He gave me the name of Snake-eye. He told me that he is going to burn me in the fire at sunrise. Oh,  my  nose!

                                                          Scene2

   (Все трое едят. Ребёнок ест куриную ногу. Говорит с паузами после каждого  предложения)

    R.Ch.: I like it very much. I hate going to school. I want some more bacon. Hey,  Give me. My father has a lot of money. What makes your nose so red, Snake-eye? (Вскакивает с места): Is there any pale-face spies hiding there? I’ll kill them!

  Sam: Do you want to go home?

  R.Ch.: What for? I have no fun at home. I hate going to school. I like camping here. Are you going to take me home, Snake-eye?

  ( Все трое лежат на полу, R.Ch. между Bill и Sam. R. Ch. Вскакивает и кричит ):

    R.Ch.: Somebody is coming. Who is there? (ложится, встает, идёт к Bill, визжит и садится ему на его грудь. Одной рукой держит его волосы, другой нож.):  I’ll take of your scalp.

    Sam :(отбирает нож и укладывает R.Ch. спать.) Go to bed immediately !

                                                          Scene3

 Bill to Sam: Sam?

 Sam: I want to  smoke

 Bill: You lie! You are afraid. What shall we do, Sam?

 Sam: Parents love their kids even if they are devils. I’ll go. It’s strange, but nobody’s looking for this devil. (Билл стоит у стены. R.Ch. на расстоянии собирается бросить камень.)

 Bill: He put a hot potato down my back. Stop it!

R.Ch.: You’ll be sorry for that!(говорит Биллу): nobody has ever hit the Red Chief. (мальчик достаёт рогатку из кармана)

Sam (хватает R.Ch. и трясёт его): I’ll take you home at once. Now, are you going to be good or not?

R.Ch.: I was only playing. I didn’t want to hit him. I’ll be good, Snake-eye.

    (Ch. и Bill пожали друг другу руки. Сэм отвёл Билла в сторону)

                                                          Scene 4

Sam: We must send a letter to his father, demanding 2000 dollars for the boy’s return.

                                                            Scene5    

                                                              A  letter  

“ Mr. Dorset! We are hiding your boy in a place which is very far from your town. Don’t look for him. It is useless! So, don’t try! You can have him back only on these terms: we demand 1500$ for his return. If you agree – write a note and send it you’re your messenger tonight at half past 8. A little way from the wood there are 3 large trees on the road.     There you’ll find a small paper box. If you do not do as we ask you to do – you will never see your boy again. (читает Mr. Dorset)

                                                          Scene6

 R.Ch.: You are my  horse. I’ll ride on you.

 Bill: Oh, my God!                            

                                                            Scene7

 Sam: Hi! Where is he?

 Bill: Sam, I am a bad friend .The boy’s gone. Everything is lost..

 Sam: If your heart strong, you may turn around and look.

   (поворачивается и медленно садится на землю)

                                                          Scene8

  (R.Ch.’s dad находит коробку, бросает письмо и уходит. Sam с биноклем наблюдает. Подходит к коробке, хватает письмо и бежит обратно. Читает письмо.)

    Sam: I’m tired of our little friend too. We’ll pay 250$  

                                                          Scene9

Mr. Dorset:  Good day, where is my lovely son? I know he is a good boy, really? What about my money or maybe you want to play with him again?

Sam:  No...Take it! (даёт деньги. Отец забирает сына, но тот визжит и бежит за ними. Отец хватает сына и тащит его за собой)

 Mr. Dorset: I am not as strong as I used to be, but I think I can promise you 10 minutes.

O. Henry:    My dear friends, I’m O. Henry, a famous American writer. I’d like to tell you my favorite story. It is on Christmas Eve.

Jim and Della, two young people, husband and wife. They live in a small flat in an old house in New York. They work hard but got very little money. They have two things which are very dear to them- Jim’s gold watch and Della’s beautiful hair. (They are sitting on the sofa in the living room. Della is brushing her hair. Jim is winding his watch.)

                                                     Scene1

Della and her friend are in the living room. They are chatting. Della is counting  money.

Della:  One dollar and eighty-seven cents! That’s all! Next day it will be Christmas! I don’t have a present for Jim!

 Della’s friend: Don’t worry! Christmas and what! You can buy a present for him after Christmas.

Della: After? No…

 Della’s friend: I think he loves you without presents.

                         what do you want to buy for him?

Della: You know Jim has a gold watch. It is very dear to him. I want to buy him a gold watch-chain.

Della’s friend: what do you want to get as a Christmas present?

Della: Once I saw beautiful combs in a shop-window …so expensive.

Della’s friend: What beautiful hair you have got!  It is so long.

Della: Yes! I have a wonderful idea!  I can sell my hair!

                                                         Scene 2

                                               At the hairdresser’s.

Della: Hello.

Hairdresser: Hello. How are you?

Della: Fine and you?

Hairdresser: Me too. What can I do for you?

Della: Will you buy my hair?

 Hairdresser:  Let me have a look at it. Yes, I shall.  It’s fine hair…

                        I can give you 20 dollars.

Della: Thank you!

                                                   Scene3

                                                    At the shop.

Shop assistant: Good afternoon! Can I help you?

Della: Hello! I’m looking for a watch- chain for my husband.

Shop assistant: We have got different watch-chains made of gold, silver and platinum. Which one do you prefer?

Della: This one. It is just what I wanted. How much is it?

Shop assistant:  Twenty-one dollars.

Della: I’ll take it. Thank you                                                          

                                                        Scene 4

Della: Jim will kill me! I hope he will love me with my new hairstyle. Please, God, make him think I’m still pretty!

Della: Good evening, Jim, darling!

Jim: Oh, my God! Why did you do it?

Della: But my hair will grow again! “ Merry Christmas!”

 Jim: You’ve cut off your hair!

Della: But look at my present! Here it is. Where is your watch?

Jim:  I’ve bought a present for you too. Merry Christmas! Open this packet, please.  Two beautiful combs that you saw in a shop window and wanted for so long.

Della:  So beautiful! Oh my God!  Where did you take money? Oh no, Jim!

Jim: I sold my gold watch, dear, to get the money for these combs. Let’s put our Christmas presents away, they are too nice to use just at present.

Della: Merry Christmas!

 Jim: Merry Christmas, dear!
