WHAT’S IN YOUR BIN?
Chucked out a loaf of bread this week/a bag of salad? A steak? If you have you are not alone – a fifth of the food we buy now goes straight in the bin. Our group investigated throwaway Beslan. We rummaged through the dust bins to see wheather we really throw away a third food.
Zalina Dzibilova, 39, a japitor at school, with 3 sons.
2 mouldy carrots
1 banana skin
1 cup-a-soup wrapper
1 unfinished pot of apple jam
1 potato net
“The Russians are very wasteful their food. I’ve just chucked away two carrots and a jar of jam, both of which had gone mouldy. Yesterday I had to throw out a salad that had gone brown – those pre-packed salads never last. Unlike people living in the centre we shop weekly and so tend to over-shop to make sure it will last. There have been times in my life when I’ve been more wasteful, but now I have a try to be better. I recycle. Everything ends up as a curry or a stew in this house.”
Bella Karaeva, 45, housewife with 2 sons.
1 empty cottage cheese container
1 banana skin
3 cabbage leaves
egg shell
butter wrapper
1 mouldy yellow pepper
“My mother was a post-war child. We had to scrape everything until it was absolutely clean - even the bitter wrapper. So, I was brought up not to waste anything and I try not to. Compared to those people, I think we are very wasteful with our food. I have to throw mouldy fruit and vegetables away and I feel very guilty about it when I do. I grind up my stale bread to make breadcrumbs and use them for cooking and, if my children don’t finish their food, I finish it for them.
Ludmila Drapp, 47, biology teacher, 2 grown up children.
1 empty yoghurt pot
1 empty vitally drink orange peel
1 crust
1 butter wrapper
1 apple core
“I hardly ever throw food away. We try to make sure we only buy what we need. I find it hard to believe that the average adult really wastes over 10000 r. Worth of food every year. We are not guilty of throwing away salad. We buy tomatoes and cucumbers, which last longer. Anything left over from our evening meal is put in the fridge or freezer to be eaten later. Any scraps that are left over are fed to the dog. I was brought up in the countryside and my mother would go out and buy what we need two or three times a week. Our society has become much more wasteful then”.
Liza Urutskoeva,75, retired with grown up son.
1 yoghurt carton
1 banana skin
assorted wrappers
melon rind
tissues
“I don’t like shopping for food so I only go to the shop every 10 days and I tend to buy too much to make sure it will last. I throw out a lot of salad before they are eaten. We live in a wasteful society and we are more wasteful in this house now than we were. When my three children were still at home, there were more people to eat op the leftovers. I don’t know how wasteful other men are, but my son certainly isn’t.
Svetlana Elbakieva, 41, Russian teacher, 2 school children.
1 apple core
1 half-eaten yoghurt
1 empty bottle of water
1 empty bottle of milk
tea bags
cabbage leaves
“Today I have thrown out the remains of my children’s breakfast - some Frosties and some crusts. I’m not worried about best before dates. I’ll still eat it, unless it’s a pre-packaged salad and it’s really brown. I swing between being very wasteful and feeling guilty about it and so trying to use every last olive. At the moment there are some very seldom-visited comers of my fridge. I do a lot of shopping. My spatial awareness isn’t good. I might buy a kilo of carrots and have no idea whether I can use them all.”
People on the planet throw away tones of unused food. Just think of the energy that goes into producing, distributing this food. There will be two or three billion more people to feed on the planet in the next 30 years without the land or water to produce their food. If the rest of the world adopts our behavior then the world will have real problems.
