Letters to Juliet
Madam T: I am sure you have guessed who the next figures of my museum are… Oh! You are right. They are Romeo and Juliet. By the way, I have a letter. There are only two words on it. Juliet, Verona. It is for you, my dear Juliet.
Juliet: Yes, it is for me, Juliet, from the clan of the Capulets. Romeo from the clan of the Montegues and I are the main characters of the tragedy by William Shakespeare «Romeo and Juliet».
Romeo: Every day my Juliet gets letters from all over the world. Her so-called secretaries from Juliet Club in Verona answer these letters. This tradition appeared thanks to Ettore Solimani, an officer who was retired. He said,” I love Juliet, of course, not so great as Romeo does, but better”. He had to take care of Juliet’s coffin in her family crypt in 1930s. For 20 years of his work, he restored many places connected with the legendary story of Romeo and Juliet. For his actions, Ettore Solimani was awarded the Honorary Title of the Cavalier of the Italian Republic. I want to add that he was very enthusiastic and romantic. By the way, one day he found that some visitors wrote their addresses on the letters to Juliet and he started to answer, he began to write letters from Juliet.
Juliet: It is a letter from Rachel from Italy: « Juliet, my dear friend. What is Love? It is a bright flash of sunlight which pierces the darkness». Yes, I agree with you. To my mind, Love is the main purpose of life, its force and value. I think Love is the light that makes our heart shine and warms the people and everything around us.
The power of main characters’ love
Romeo: A lot of writers, poets, composers, scriptwriters, producersdevoted their works to Romeo and Juliet. Many films, ballets, operas, musicals were created.
My dear Juliet, I am so happy to be with you! I love my Juliet.
I know my dear Juliet is a very strong person. She is very inventive and very ambitious. She can find some power to overcome her weakness and resistance of her relatives and parents. She is perfect as she is innocent, frank, open-hearted, honest and very modest. She is crystal.
Romeo. Ah, Juliet, if the measure of thy joy
Be heap'd like mine, and that thy skill be more
6
To blazon it, then sweeten with thy breath
This neighbourair, and let rich music's tongue
Unfold the imagin'd happiness that both
Receive in either by this dear encounter.
Juliet. Conceit, more rich in matter than in words,
Brags of his substance, not of ornament.
They are but beggars that can count their worth;
But my true love is grown to such excess
cannot sum up sum of half my wealth.
Juliet: We love each other very much, but our «Two households, both alike in dignity, from ancient grudge break to new mutiny, where civil blood makes civil hands unclean». Our love flamed up in spite of the confrontation of our families and got stronger and stronger. The danger of being disclosed threatened us and gave us some force. We enjoyed every second of our meeting, of our talk, of our touch, of our love…
We objected to old views and relationships; we have shown an example of a new life. The hostility of our clans couldn’t separate us because we were united by our love. This love arises from the admiration for beauty, for the belief in greatness of the person and the desire to share with him the joy of life.
Romeo: Romeo and Juliet are the example of people who are strong and fragile, tender and courageous, young and sacrificial. Our names have become the symbol of pure and sincere love. Our Love is real. It wins the hostility between the families, the hatred and cunning. The beauty of our relations and our great morality admires everyone nowadays. The passion of our hearts warms the people, gives them some hope and proves that the true Love does exist. Though we die, our love has changed the relations between our families, as it has stopped the conflict.
Juliet: I agree with you. Love is an act of bravery, the top of the development of human feelings. My Romeo is both strong, brave, risky and easy-going, sensible and romantic. He has a kind heart, he is very gentle. In one of the letters I read surprisingly wise words: «Love is the only source of life. It is essential. Nobody and nothing can win this great feeling».
Romeo, do you remember that evening, the balcony?
(A dialogue from the play “Romeo and Juliet”)
There are some quotations from the play.
1) “…stony limits cannot hold love out.” (Romeo)
«Каменные ограды остановить любовь не могут.»
2) “O, swear not by the moon, th' inconstant moon,
7
That monthly changes in her circled orb,
Lest that thy love prove likewise variable.”(Juliet
«Нет, не клянись обманчивой луной
В любви до гроба деве молодой!
Иль будешь, как луна, непостоянен…»)
3) “Parting is such sweet sorrow,
That I shall say good night till it be morrow.”(Juliet)
«Мне так приятна мука расставанья,
Что до утра твердила б «До свиданья!»
4) “Conceit, more rich in matter than in words,
Brags of his substance, not of ornament.
They are but beggars that can count their worth;
But my true love is grown to such excess
cannot sum up sum of half my wealth.”(Juliet)
«Прекрасное не требует прикрас.
Себе назначит цену только нищий.
Моя любовь напрасных слов не ищет —
Она и так безмерно разрослась.»
5) “What's in a name?” (Juliet)
«Чтовименитвоем?»
6) “That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.”(Juliet)
«Роза пахнет розой,
Хоть розой назови её,
Хоть нет.»

Глава 3. Краткая биография У. Шекспира
Some words about the author
Romeo: Great words. They are extremely meaningful nowadays.
And what about the author of the tragedy? I would like to tell you about the time when William Shakespeare, who wrote about Juliet and me, lived and worked.
Do you know that his family was not rich, but it was of noble origin? He was the eldest son in the family and he had three brothers and four sisters. He was born on the 23rd of April 1564 in a small town, Stratford-upon-Avon.
The Stratford school was a difficult place at that time. The pupils had to be at school at six in the morning in the warm season and an hour later in winter. School days were long, and only on the holidays William Shakespeare could have a real rest.
The best thing of all in William`s life were groups of actors who visited Stratford from time to time. He watched them and knew that he wanted to be an actor.
When William was twenty-one, he went to London. He became an actor there and later he began to write plays. Shakespeare watched the new life and he showed how differently people understood it. Life itself was shown in his plays. Shakespeare`s heroes are still on the stage.
“All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts…”
In his play “As You Like It” («Как вам это понравится», 1599-1600) we can read these words that have become a famous quotation.
The great playwright died on the 23rd of April 1616. William Shakespeare`s four hundredth birthday was celebrated in 1964 all over the world. A beautiful stamp of that year made in our country shows his portrait and scenes from Romeo and Juliet.

From the history of the Red and White RoseWar
So, the story is as old as the hills but it is still actual. It makes writers, poets, artists, composers and cinematographers turn to it again and again. Vladimir Vasilyev, a ballet dancer and a ballet director once said, “The performance “Romeo and Juliet” is up-to-date especially today if we have a look at the events in the world because in classics you can find the answers to the eternal questions such as betrayal, love, hatred, evil and good.
Sorry to say, violence and wars are eternal. There are many examples in the present and in the past. One of the brightest examples of great love and hatred was the War of the Red and White Roses.
The White rose symbolizing the Virgin was used as a distinctive sign of the Yorkists, and the Red rose was used as a distinctive sign of the Lancastrians.
Earlier, it decorated the arms of the House of Lancaster. The Lancastrians argued for the throne of England with the Yorkists whose arms had a white rose. The war for the throne between the Lancastrians and the Yorkists became known in the history of the country as the War of the Red and White Rose. The bloody struggle for the crown and rule practically lasted for about 30 years (1455-1485) with some breaks. It was a merciless annihilation of the old aristocracy with rights and claims to become rulers, and its romantic name only emphasizes the ruthlessness by a degree of contrast.The wars of the roses began when in 1399 barons of the North supported the Lancaster who had a red rose in their crest. The barons of the South supported the Yorks whose crest was decorated by a white rose. There were some big problems: difficult economic situation of England, many towns were destroyed, many people died during the war, lots of people became so poor that they had to steal or beg.
Finally, the two dynasties had been destroyed, and a distant relative of the Lancaster family – Henry Tudor married Elizabeth of Yorkin1485(the two roses united) and Henry Tudor was crowned Henry VII of England (1485-1509). So, we can say that Love could stop the war and unite the families.
When the Lancastrians won the war, their arms of the Red Rose which is white in the centre became the symbol of the whole England.
The 15th century saw the development of woolen textile manufacture, steel making developed in Birmingham, Sheffield, South Wales. Trade development facilitated the growth of the Navy and shipbuilding.
10
The formation of the common national language manifested itself in fiction and Geoffrey Chaucer (1340-1400) work (Canterbury Tales) and in geographical and
commercial books
William Caxton (1477) brought a printing press and started book printing in England.
Since the middle of the 15thcentury the English language became the one working language in the whole of England.
The 15th century saw a development of folklore – ballads of Robin Hood’s were dramatized on the village commons; singing and other musical arts, dramatic arts, portrait painting left wonderful examples for us to admire.
Love and self-sacrificeareof great importance today
We can find the examples of selfless work and sincere love in our modern society.
I hope you`ve heard about a well-known woman, who founded the International Public Organization «Fair Aid» in 2007. It is a charity organization which helps people who suffer from serious diseases such as cancerand some others.They give people food, medicine, they provide free medical care. They also build houses where homeless can warm themselves. In 2010 Elizaveta Glinka collected clothes, food and other items in favour of people suffered from the forest fires. In 2012 E. Glinka and her charity organization raised up the clothes, blankets and boots for people in Krymsk, who were damaged by a flood. In 2012 she became a member of the Council under the control of the president of the Russian Federationon the development of the society and the rights of the citizens. She also helped people of eastern Ukraine when the armed conflict started there. Since 2015 E. Glinka visited Syria many times, she brought medicines there and took medical care of people of the country. On the 25th of December in 2016 Doctor Liza died in the air crash not far from Sochi. She was going on a mission with some medicine for the university hospital Tishrin in Lataky.
She was awarded the Order of Friendship for her sociable conscientious activity in 2 May, 2012. She got a medal ‘For the Blessing’ for her charity in 23 March, 2015, a medal ‘Hasten to Do Good’ in 17 December, 2014, for defending the right of people to life, a medal ‘For the Purity of Thoughts and Nobility of Affairs’ in 16 January, 2017 after her death.
I would like to add the words of Juliet:
“My bounty is as boundless as the sea,
My love as deep; the more I give to thee,
The more I have.”
11
In conclusion, I can say that true love is real on the one hand and magic on the other hand. True love can make some wonder.It can stop a conflict. It can help other people around you. It can improve relations and strengthen your character. It makes people happy and creative.
14% опрошенных читали произведение;
11% опрошенных смотрели фильм, балет;
- проблема вражды/конфликта (между семьями);
- проблема взаимоотношений (семей, отца и дочери);

Juliet. Ay me!
Romeo. She speaks.
O, speak again, bright angel! for thou art
As glorious to this night, being o'er my head,
As is a winged messenger of heaven
Unto the white-upturned wond'ring eyes
Of mortals that fall back to gaze on him
When he bestrides the lazy-pacing clouds
And sails upon the bosom of the air.
Juliet. O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?
Deny thy father and refuse thy name!
Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,
And I'll no longer be a Capulet.
Romeo. [aside] Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?
15
Juiet. 'Tis but thy name that is my enemy.
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What's Montague? …
What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name;
And for that name, which is no part of thee,
Take all myself.
Romeo. I take thee at thy word.
Call me but love, and I'll be new baptiz'd;
Henceforth I never will be Romeo.
Juliet. Oh, Romeo! How cam'st thou hither, tell me, and wherefore?
The orchard walls are high and hard to climb.
Juliet. By whose direction found'st thou out this place?
Romeo. By love, that first did prompt me to enquire.
Juliet.
Dost thou love me?
Romeo. If my heart's dear love-
Juliet. Well, do not swear. Although I joy in thee,
I have no joy of this contract to-night.
It is too rash, too unadvis'd, too sudden;
Too like the lightning, which doth cease to be
Ere one can say 'It lightens.' Sweet, good night!
This bud of love …аs sweet repose and rest
Come to thy heart as that within my breast!
Juliet. Good night, dear Romeo, good night indeed.
A thousand times good night!
Romeo. A thousand times good night!
O blessed, blessed night! I am afeard,
Being in night, all this is but a dream,
Too flattering-sweet to be substantial.
