Victoria and Albert on the map of London
Madam Тussaud: I like walking in one of my favourite parts of London, South Kensington. During the walk I often call on the Victoria and Albert Museum. Do you know who Victoria and Albert are? Do you know? Let's listen to the Queen Victoria. Good afternoon, Your Majesty! Can you tell us, please, who Victoria and Albert are?
Victoria: Good afternoon! If you have a look at the map of London, you can see the Victoria and Albert Museum (the V&A). You are welcome to the world’s leading museum of art and design. There you can find inspiration in the incredible range of exclusive gifts, jewellery, books, fashion, prints & posters and much more...
There are many other places in London connected with these two names: Albert Memorial, Royal Albert Hall, Victoria Park, Victoria Embankment as well as Albert Embankment, Queen Victoria memorial.
Глава 2. Виктория и Альберт – кто они?
Who is Victoria? Who is Albert?
I’d like to tell you a story of great love and remarkable prosperity. The story of my life, the queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (1837-1901).
I'm Victoria! I was born on the 24th of May, in 1819. My parents expected me to be on the throne, which was inherited me by my uncle George the fourth. They prepared me to be the queen of the country.
My parents expected me to be the queen of the country. I got good royal education and was strictly brought up. My governess, Louise Lehzen, was from Germany. I loved and trusted her very much. She was my good advisor when I was young.
I remember the 20th of June 1837 very well. Early in the morning I was said, that my uncle, the king of Great Britain, died. The Chamberlain of England and the Archbishop of Canterbury came to tell me that I was the queen of Great Britain. I realized that it was very difficult and responsible, and I believed, that I could live and work in favour of the country, though I was very young, I was only 18.
5
I got acquainted with my future husband Albert (he was my cousin of Saxe-Coburg of Gotha) when I was 17, and married him in 1840. I didn't like him first. But he changed greatly, he was elegant, handsome, smart and intelligent. He read a lot, he became deeply interested in the British affairs, both foreign and home.
I loved Albert very much. He was very clever, smart, he had different interests, he was fond of art, architecture, music. I liked operettas, he preferred classical music. He as a noble man was good at fencing. Though our interests were different, we had an ideal family. He was very careful to me and our children. I hope you know we had nine children! Our family was very important for us. And a family, we think, must be essential for everyone.
So, he paid attention to education of every person both from poor and rich families. Let’s have a look at some facts: in1837 43% of the British people couldn’t read and write, but in 1894 only 3% of population were illiterate. He worked a lot and gave an example how to work: he had his own farm. Such traits of character as being reasonable, hardworking, thrifty and careful were the most important at that time.
It was also the time of the first gentlemen, who had to be educated, well-brought, elegant, delicate and respect people around them. A true gentleman should wear a smoking and a hat and follow the Gentleman’s Directory.
Oh, I remember one Christmas Day. He suggested bringing and decorating a fir-tree in our Windsor Castle for our children and our guests. Next year it became a tradition not only for our family but for the other British homes.
There is one more charming tradition. During our wedding ceremony I was wearing a white dress decorated with white flowers of the orange-tree, a white wreath and white bridal veil. It was quite unusual and quite opposite to British traditions. Since, it has become a wedding tradition all over the world. Almost all the brides wear a white dress on this happy day.
So, I was great! It was the happiest day of my life. “It was the main "Wedding of the century", as newspapers wrote.
Глава 3. Викторианская эпоха
Victorian Age
The time I lived and reigned in is known as the Victorian Age. It's famous for industrialization of the country, developing manufacturing, inventions of a steam engine, telegraph, photography. The first rail way appeared in the country. I’m proud of George Stephenson who built a locomotive – “the Rocket”, which

reached a maximum speed of forty eight km per hour. London was the first city
with the underground, the Tube as we call it. Great Britain was named as the Workshops of the World. A new class of people, a middle class, appeared.
The technological revolution was also strengthened by some social reforms:
Women began their struggle for emancipation.
Britain continued the policy of expansion to Asia, Africa, South America. New Zealand became a colony of the British Empire in 1841.
I am proud of many people of the British Empire. Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde, Rudyard Kipling, sir Arthur Conan-Doyle, Lewis Carroll, the Bronte sisters are the representatives of my era. They glorified English culture. Charles Darwin – the founder of the modern theory of evolution – shocked the world. Florence Nightingale, “the lady with the lamp”, organized hospitals and treatment of the wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. By the way, she was considered the most famous woman …after me, of course.
I must admit, my husband Albert was crazy about engineering and technique.
He was the initiator of a great display of Victorian glory and progress in the country – the Great Exhibition of 1851. This international exhibition was quite a new idea, and Albert had to overcome a lot of opposition. The Exhibition building was an enormous glass-and-iron structure – the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, it had on display machinery and products from Britain, the Empire and other countries. The Crystal Palace was the symbol of Technological progress. Six million people visited the halls of the palace, it was one third of the population of the whole country. There the visitors could see a famous diamond Koh-i-Noor, which is now set in the front of the Queen Mother's Crown, part of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom, and is seen by millions of visitors in the Tower of London each year.
Albert founded the museum of British family’s articles in 1852. He collected everything that was typical of British life: dishes, clothes, fabric, clocks, tables, pictures, vases, minerals and. You can find there the biggest collection of the first photos, cameras and many other articles of photography as well as a fax-machine. Later this museum got a new name: the Victoria and Albert Museum.
7
Science Museum, Westminster Palace with Victoria Tower, Tower and Westminster Bridges, Westminster Cathedral on Victoria Street, Nelson’s Column in the centre of Trafalgar Square were built at that time. Madam Tussaud’s Museum got a new building.
So it was the period of blossom of culture and the triumph of science, the new style of clothes, the style of luxury and comfort.
It was the time of our love, Victoria and Albert.
In conclusion, I have realised that many sights of London are connected with the names of Victoria and Albert because these people made a great contribution to the development of Great Britain, to its glory and prosperity.
