"Pets in the life of the British"
Theses
I like animals a lot. At home I have a cat and a dog. And I also love English. And I was curious to know how in Britain they treat animals. After all, pets are not only a part of our private life, but of the entire culture of the people.
In relation to animals, one can judge the traditions and character of people of any country.
According to the research of the society “Big Cats in Britain” there are 60 million people in the UK. The British have10 million cats, 8 million dogs, 1 million rabbits.
They also keep hamsters, guinea pigs, lizards, budgies, small fishes and exotic animals and reptiles at home: monkeys, snakes, spiders, crocodiles, tigers, leopards, lions, ostriches.
You can buy a pet only at the age of 16 at special exhibitions, zoo shops, veterinary nursery and shelter.
English breeds of cats and dogs is one of the most popular in the world.
Great Britain gave the world a bizarre, unordinary Devonian Rex, the Manx tailless cat, Scottish Fold, Cornish Rex and Oreon Rex, Scottish Stright and others.
А symbol of England is the British short-haired cat. It is still the leader in the rating of English cat lovers.
The English brought out more dog breeds than any other nation.
Especially popular are Jack Russell Terrier, Cocker Spaniel, Beagle, Yorkshire Terriers and others.
Yorkie is the leader among other breeds. During the Second World War, these small dogs were used to send messages, because they are small, smart and not as suspicious as big dogs.
The symbol of the truly British breed, its pride, is the bulldog.
The official history of cynology began in England. The first dog show was held in England on June 28, 1859 in Newcastle. In 1873, the English Kennel Club was formed and the rules for holding exhibitions were written. Standards have started to be created.
Queen Elizabeth II (the second) is the patron of The National League for the Protection of Dogs (NCDL). The president is the Duke of Wellington.
Queen Elizabeth has 4 dogs of Welsh-Corgi breed Pembroke: Pharos, Linnet, Emma and Swift.
The Queen passionately loves and breeds horses and still loves horseback riding.
Her Majesty is the official patroness of swans.
Every year she participates in the solemn ceremony of Swan upping.
Animals take part in sports. Royal Ascot is the most famous annual horse racing in the world and the main event in the British secular calendar.
Animals are very popular in British literature. For example, "Alice in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll, "Stories about animals" by Ernest Seton-Thompson, “The Jungle Book” by Rudyard Kipling.
Some books about animals have been screened by British cinema and other countries.
For example, “Winnie the Pooh and his friends” by Alan Alexander Milne, a family film "Babe: The Four-legged Babe" based on Dick King-Noonan's book “The Sheep-Pig”, a fairy tale by the Scottish writer Kenneth Graham "The Wind in the Willows".
Conclusions:
1. The British keep various of animals, but the most popular are cats and dogs.
2. There are no stray dogs and cats in the United Kingdom.
3. There are strict rules for acquiring animals.
4. Britain is one of the most advanced countries in breeding new breeds of cats and dogs.
5. Animals in Britain are loved by everybody from simple British to monarchs.
You can tell a lot about the tradition of relations between animals and people in Britain. This is a very interesting topic. I hope to continue studying it in the future.
