Quarrymen In early 1956, John Lennon, impressed by the music of Bill Haley and Elvis Presley, decided to organize his own band. It included John's school buddies. Initially, the band was called The Black Jacks and a week later was renamed The Quarrymen - in honor of their school. July 6, 1957, during a concert in the garden of St. Peter's Church, Ivan Von introduced John Lennon to Paul McCartney. John was impressed with Paul's musical knowledge. The guy had chords, knew the words and was able to pick up the latest rock and roll novelties. John pondered for some time whether it was worth having such a strong competitor for leadership in the group, but two weeks later he gave Paul an invitation to join The Quarrymen. In the spring of 1958 for occasional performances, and in the fall - on a regular basis, Paul's friend George Harrison joined them. Despite the age, the guy approached all by nature and showed a decent class of playing the instrument.

The appearance of The Beatles During his studies at art college, John met and became friends with Stuart Sutcliffe and in January 1960 brought him to the group. Stewart could not play at all, but still became a bass player and the fourth member of the group. In the first two years, Lennon and McCartney managed to write about a hundred songs, and some of them were included in later albums ("Love Me Do", "One After 909", "When I'm Sixty-Four" and others). Even before the arrival of great popularity, John and Paul agreed that the two will sing together, regardless of who wrote what. After 1963, they had rarely composed songs by themselves, but all their compositions recorded for The Beatles were signed by Lennon-McCartney.

Hamburg (1960-1961) In the summer of 1960, the group, which had already acquired its final name, was invited to play in Hamburg. This forced The Beatles to urgently seek out a drummer to match the professional contract. In August 1960, Paul McCartney contacted Pete Best. On August 16, the band left England, and the very next day their first gig took place at the Indra club in Hamburg, where the band played until October. The schedule of performances was extremely harsh: as a rule, one club played one hour in the club, another hour - another, for 12 hours. Received The Beatles in 1960 at 2.5 pounds a day for each. Brian Epstein October 28, 1961, in the music store "NEMS" in Whitechapel , where the counter was the owner of the institution, Brian Epstein, a young man came in and asked for a record of "My Bonnie" performed by The Beatles. Brian apologized to the buyer - he had never heard of such a group.Epstein was informed that the band played in the popular club Cavern. As Brian recalled, after the first visit to the club, he was completely "bewitched" by the music of The Beatles. After a personal meeting, he was also bribed by the children's charisma and the sense of humor inherent in them. Epstein began to enter the club in the evenings, and gradually he had the idea to become the manager of a promising group. December 3, 1961, Brian invitedthe guys to his office to discuss the possibility of joint business. The mostsignificant was Brian's promise to do everything to record the band on a well-known music label. John confirmed the agreement, and theysigned the first contract, according to which Epstein would conduct their affairs.

The first contract Epstein immediately began trying to organize a contract with a serious record company. In February 1962 the first recording of The Beatles for the BBC radio was held. In April, The Beatles set out on their third tour to Hamburg as the best rock band in Liverpool. The members of the group began to seize some disappointment - Brian unsuccessfully studded the thresholds of the largest firms. Having listened to the preliminary materials, publisher Sid Coleman liked the sound, and he turned to George Martin. On February 9, 1962, Martin got acquainted with the materials brought by Epstein. He appreciated the good technique of playing guitar George and noticed that the band's leader is probably Paul. Finally, such a serious figure in the recording business showed a genuine interest in the band. Martin wanted to hear the professionally recorded performance of The Beatles and invited the quartet to audition for the studio.
Слайд 10
On May 31, The Beatles returned from a tour in Hamburg, and on June 6, four songs were auditioned and recorded. Lennon and McCartney had a good vocals, and Martin did not know who to choose. As a result, Martin came to a somewhat unexpected decision: everyone will sing in the band. In late July 1962 Martin confirmed that Parlophone was ready to sign a contract with The Beatles for one year and release at least four singles. There was also a difficult change, which Martin insisted - replacement of the drummer. It was unpleasant, but inevitable, to replace the full member when the team was on the verge of success. The candidature of Ringo Starr was offered by George. Knew it for a long time, Ringo took part in recording the record My Bonnie. After some negotiations, on August 16, 1962, Ringo Star joined the Beatles. In September the quartet again arrived in London for the next session. This time they recorded "Love Me Do" by Paul and John. George Martin said that "Love me do" and, in particular, "Please Please Me" are potentially future hits of the band. The single "Love Me Do / P.S. I Love You "released October 5, 1962, reached the 17th place in the hit parade, which could be regarded as the success of the beginning band, especially with their own song.

Tours in the US and around the world Epstein and the team have long felt the ground for a touring trip to the US. Trial ball Brian launched in the summer of 1963, releasing some songs. Then nothing happened, and the released singles did not have success. All previous attempts by British artists to win fame with the American public have been unsuccessful. After the success of "I Want to Hold Your Hand", with a million pre-orders, the position of The Beatles in the US has become so strong that it was senseless to put off further tours . The sixth single of the band "Can not Buy Me Love / You Can not Do That" was released on March 24 and immediately won first place on both sides of the ocean. Pre-orders in Britain and America have exceeded three million mark. The compositions of the band dominated the charts of many countries of the world.

Actually, the years 1964-66 were marked in the group's biography mainly by large tours and records of new albums in between them. On average, there were three tours per year: two compulsory ones - in England and America and the third in some other country. The Beatles continued to beat the record behind the record.

Beatles for Sale After the deafening success of the songs of Lennon and McCartney on the previous album A Hard Day's Night, the band returned to recording borrowed songs - on the Beatles For Sale album there are six of them. This is due to the fact that, according to the terms of the contract, the group had to record the fourth album in a very short time, the recordings were conducted in a few intervals between tours. The other eight songs were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. None of the songs from this album was released as a single in the UK. Nevertheless, such songs as "I'll Follow the Sun" and "Eight Days a Week" are very well known to this day. Early versions of the song "I'll Follow the Sun" were written by Paul McCartney even before the appearance of The Beatles

Yesterday Paul McCartney claims that the melody of the song came to him in a dream, and waking up, he was sure that he had just heard this melody somewhere before, and did not compose it. McCartney composed the melody as early as the beginning of the year and gave it to George Martin, not Knowing how best to arrange it. Martin offered a rather unexpected version of the performance - Paul accompanies himself on an acoustic guitar, accompanied by a string quartet. "Yesterday" has gained independent popularity as one of the most famous creations of Paul and The Beatles, becoming a classic of world music. According to the Guinness Book of Records, more cover versions have been created for this song than for any other one ever written - only in the 20th century it was performed by various musicians over seven million times

Rubber Soul The sixth studio album of The Beatles, released in late 1965. The album was recorded in just four weeks. According to many musicologists, it was with the album Rubber Soul that the band started the fundamental changes that led to the development of many unusual sub-trends in rock music. "It was the first album that introduced the new Beatles to the world," George Martin recalled years later. - We then began to think for the first time the categories of the album as an independent and self-valuable work of art. " The album clearly hears the transition from the "Merseyside" sound to the new, in it for the first time distinguish elements of psychedelics inherent in the late period of the group's creativity. From the love lyrics on which most of the early texts were based, the authors go on to more complex philosophical constructs. Experiments with sound recording begin.

Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I need not argue about that; I'm right and I will be proven right. We're more popular than Jesus now; I do not know which will go first - rock 'n' roll or Christianity. Jesus was all right and his disciples were thick and ordinary. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me. - John Lennon In Britain, his words did not make a special impression on the public. However, the American magazine reprinted an interview with Lennon just before the band's last tour in the US, especially in the southern states, and there were riots in South Africa. It came to public burning of records and stuffed members of the group. The situation was so serious that Epstein postponed the planned tours in the US, fearing terrorist acts. In the end, in order to avoid escalation of the conflict, John had to bring his official apologies, in that he did not want to offend anyone. Almost 30 years after the incident, in an interview for Rolling Stone, the main rival of The Beatles in the 1960s suggested that The Beatles were "more than Jesus" then .

According to the vote, conducted by the BBC radio station among its listeners in 2006, the album ranks first in popularity in the UK. Sgt. Pepper's ranked ninth in the list of albums - the world's leading sales with a result in more than 30 million copies. Much of the album was also new. Careful work was done on the envelope and the illustration, executed in the form of a complex collage. The costs of preparing the title cover for the album cover alone were comparable to what was spent on the whole record of the album. For the first time the musicians approached the album as an integral work with a certain concept. The conceptual idea was found by Paul, who proposed to perform the compositions "on behalf" of the fictional band Sergeant Pepper.
