Officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the financial, cultural, and transportation center of the S an F rancisco Bay Area, a region of 7.15 million people which includes San Jose and Oakland. San Francisco is located on the West Coast of the United States in northern California and washed by the Pacific Ocean.

History European discovery of the San Francisco Bay area and its islands began in 1542.In 1579, Sir Francis Drake and his crew arrive in Golden Hind and spent five weeks repairing the ship and meeting with the natives. The Spanish found the entrance to the bay in 1769, and by 1776, the first colonizing party arrived to found the San Francisco and Mission Dolores. In 1869, the first rain arrived in San Francisco and in 1870 San Francisco became the tenth largest city in the United States.
