My native street: through the years

                                                                 It’s interesting, beautiful and historical.

Do you know the name of street where you live?

And why is your street so called?

Is it important to know the history of the street?

These are the questions I asked my friends, other teenagers and relatives. And I realized that everyone knows the name of the street. But 60% don’t know anything about the history of the street, 30 % know, but little. And only 10 % can tell much information about it. So 80 % think that to know the history of the street is very important and only some boys don’t want to know about it.

My native street is called by the name of Arkady Ivanov.  It‘s a very interesting name.  I also saw a monument to Ivanov near my school. So he was a really famous person in his time.

I think we know little about Tomsk and its streets. And I have identified the topic of my research as " My native street: through the years".

The aim of my research is to compare the nowadays view of the street with the historical facts.

 The tasks:

-        learn the information about my native street

-        make a survey among my friends and other teenagers

-        take some photos of the street

-        compare historical facts and real view of Ivanova Street

The type of the work: research

The hypothesis:  My native street has a small history but many interesting places.

I have learnt that Ivanova Street is about 1 km; it starts from Lenin Avenue and goes to the west, down to the river Tom, crossing several streets.
       An interesting fact is that the street changed its name three times. The first name was Turemnaya Street. I think it was connected with the prison, which was built in this street in the 19th century. The next version of the name is Ispravitelnaya Street. It was given to the process of correcting offenders held in the prison. The following name is Klinicheskaya Street. The name was given by the location of the prison hospital there. In 1969 the street was renamed and became known as Ivanova Street.

Who was Arcady Ivanov?

Arkady Ivanov was a famous person of the revolutionary movement. Four times he was arrested and imprisoned. So in 1911, Ivanov was transferred to Tomsk prison. After jail delivery he remained and lived in Tomsk.
          And now let’s look at the real face of the street and compare it with the facts that history has left to us. According to documents from the 19th century, there were a few houses in Turemnaya Street. In 1878 there were only six ones. Now Ivanova Street is densely built up and has a lot of different buildings. In ancient documents we can find the name of the Tomsk Prison Castle. In the 19th century there were many revolutionaries in the cells of Tomsk Prison Castle. Now Tomsk Polytechnic University is located in the reconstructed building of the castle

In the 19th century on the crossing of Turemnaya Street and Moscow tract, as now there was the brewery. Then it belonged to Robert Krueger, now it is «Tomsk beer."
         The next building is TOMSK ELECTROMECHANICAL PLANT - the oldest company of the city. The factory was founded in 1920. Today it is the main producer of instruments in Russia. In 1932, there was organized the Clinical Chemistry Department of Tomsk State University. At the end of Ivanova Street there is a Stadium.
           In the 20th century the street was not paved. It is known that a birch grove park was on the left side of Klinicheskaya Street.  I believe that in this place there is a new park of brewers. In the park there is a monument to the Tomsk brewer. In the park there are many benches, sandpits and flower beds.
        There was also an old alley in the same street. According to the memories of my grandmother it was over 30 years old. And it was paved and beautiful part of the street. Now it is the place for new alley.

In Ivanova Street there are many new buildings, but I like the sector of old wooden houses. My family lives in one of these houses. Real information about my house, I haven’t found. But I know the building is very old. My grandfather said that military barracks were located in our house in the past. I think those soldiers who guarded the prisoners of Tomsk prison castle, lived here.
        So I have learned that

• my street had 3 names for its history;
• from the  19th century to the present day the face of the street has changed a lot ;
• now  the street is modern and beautiful;
• but there are a few old houses in the street.
