During the Great Patriotic war, the capital of the Urals became the largest evacuation point in the USSR. A huge number of factories , science academies, universities, art galleries and theatres from all over the country were transferred to Sverdlovsk. There are some buildings, which keep the memories of those heroic days.

Yekaterinburg’s museum of Fine arts Yekaterinburg’s museum of Fine arts was founded in 1936. In July 1941 two trains were evacuated from Leningrad to the Urals with 1 million 118 thousand masterpieces of the Hermitage collection . After the war, in October 1945, all works of art were returned to Leningrad.

Sverdlovsk museum of local lore Moscow plant № 217 was evacuated in this building in the years of the Great Patriotic War. It took 28 days to transport all equipment, tools, materials , technical documentation and 10 thousand workers and their families. The plant produced and sent to the front thousands of optical devices .

Moscow factory № 214. Ural manufacturing plant The plant “METRON” was created in 1918 in Moscow. Later, in 1936 it was renamed in “Factory № 214”. Threat of capturing Moscow appeared in the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. Because of this , the factory was completely evacuated in Sverdlovsk in a very short period of time. During the Great Patriotic War the factory was the main producer of devices for military aircraft. The company produced different instruments which were included in the aerobatic complex of planes and helicopters.

Plant № 8 . Kalinin Machine-Building Plant Kalinin Machine-Building plant was founded in 1866 in St. Petersburg. It was evacuated in Moscow region in 1918. Later, in 1941 it was moved to Yekaterinburg. During the Great Patriotic War the plant produced 20,000 anti-aircraft guns, ending production of cannon artillery of 152-mm anti-aircraft gun KM-52

Sverdlovsk Radio committee From 1941 to 1943 in this old building in Radischeva Street 2, there was the broadcasting centre of the USSR . The famous Levitan's "Attention, Moscow is speaking!" actually sounded from Sverdlovsk . Hitler called Levitan "his personal enemy No. 1". Joseph Stalin was only on the second place! Hitler wanted to capture Levitan alive, so that when Germany won, it would be announced by Yuri Borisovich Levitan . That was the dream of the Fuhrer.

The headquarters of t he 3rd Volnovaskyi Guards Red Banner Order of Suvorov Motor Rifle Division In August 1940 153rd Infantry Division was created in the city of Sverdlovsk , later it was transformed in the 3rd Guards Rifle Division . Since August 1940 and June 1941 division was engaged in combat training in Kamyshlovsky camps as part of the Urals Military District .

School named after Turgenev. The Hospital 354 Military hospital 354 was situated on Vainera street, in the building of school of Turgenev. (Now it is Ekaterinburg Theatre Institute). Grammar school № 2, the Hospital 1037 and the sorting hospital 3415 Hospital 1037 was evacuated in the building of grammar school № 2 in 1941 and was placed there until March of 1942. All-Union Institute of Coal-Chemical. Hospital 1071 The hospital 1071 was placed in the building of All-Union Institute of Coal-Chemical from 30.10.1941 to 30.09.1943 . Special courses were organized for patients. They were preparing shoemakers and repair workers of household appliances. Artistic vocational school № 32 . 197th Tank Brigade 197th Tank Brigade was formed by the initiate of the workers in the Sverdlovsk region in 1943. It was located in the building of 42 nd artistic vocational school. The brigade left Sverdlovsk in June of 1943 and joined Fourth Panzer Army. 70 th army NKVD. The army began forming in October 1942 near Sverdlovsk as a separate NKVD Army of the STAVKA Reserve. It was located on Malyshev street, 22.
