Why we celebrate the new year on January,1 In December 1699 the Russian Emperor Peter the Great made a decree that from January, 1, 1700, New Year in Russia would be celebrated on January, 1. Peter ordered Russian people "to hang some decorations made of the branches of pine on the walls of their houses, light firewalks and have fun. The Royal decree ordered to wish each other a happy New Year. Since that day the civil New Year is celebrated on January, 1.

On New Year's Eve everyone should wear new clothes to be rich in the next year . Before the New Year holiday all the battered dishes were thrown out of the house, the windows and the mirrors should be clean. New Year Customs in Russia Russian people had some New Year customs:

You can’t give money on New Year’s Eve, or you won’t have money the whole year. Usually before the beginning of the next year people gave all debts , forgave all offences. So far, it was believed that taking a loan before the New Year holiday was impossible, or the whole year would be spent in debt.

You couldn’t sleep on New Year night, because you could oversleep the whole year, the holiday table should have the best dishes, people could not stay alone on the New Year night.

T raditional New Year food The main traditional food was the roast pork. It was in the center of the table. And that had a sense - a pig symbolized wealth in the house. Also on the table was kutia - a traditional Russian cereal with h oney and nuts, fresh bread, pies with various fillings, sweets and fruits. The traditional Russian drinks were kisel and compot usually made of dried fruit.

But poultry, bird or hare never appeared on New Year's table because the happiness could fly away like a bird, or run away like a hare out of the house !

New Year games and entertainment And even though the weather was freezing, people were not afraid of the cold. They had a lot of fun. They burned huge bonfires in the streets and organized dances around them. According to our ancestors dancing around a bonfire and jumping through the flames helped to encourage the sun to awake the frozen ground.

Kolyadki The Russian tradition on the first day of the New year was to sing kolyadki - Russian carols. People who sang kolyadki were called “ kolyadovshchiki ”. They usually had a long stick with a star at the end. They walked from house to house singing merry songs. These songs wished the hosts of the house happiness, wealth, health and a good harvest in the next year. People gave them buiscuits - baked of rye dough figures of domestic animals - cows , horses , sheep. These buiscuits were called “ kazulki “, “ rogaliki ”, “ baranki ”.

Ryazhenyie Ryazhenyie were people who visited houses, performed funny scenes and amused hosts. Ryazhenyie wore clothes on the wrong side and masks; they used decorations and instruments producing noisy sounds.

New Year holiday is a time of mysteries, happiness and fun. The celebration of it has a lot of old interesting traditions and rituals and I think they have some sense. A magic fairy tale comes to us on the 31 st of December!
