Aleksandr Vasilievich Suvorov (1720-1800)

Suvorov is the best known for his crossing the Alps during the Napoleonic Wars. In September 1799,a force of 18,000 soldiers and 5,000 Cossacks undertook a 200 km trek in deep snow across the Alps. Thousands of soldiers died of cold and hunger.

Overcoming huge difficulties, Suvorov’s army and its Austrian allies eventually joined forces. But Suvorov is remembered not only because of the military feat, but also because of his historical and cultural aftermath of his mission. The DEVIL’S BRIDGE in Switzerland: The only two reminders one can find nowadays in Switzerland are a 12-metre cross carved into cliffs and Suvorov’s statue. Suvorov’s operation was the most important battle between the Russia and French armies.

However , its significance goes far beyond military science. Russian soldiers brought more advanced culture to the deeply provincial Swiss peasants and “poured fresh blood into the veins of old Europe.”Since then, Russia and Switzerland have cooperated on a regular basis. Some Russian words such as ‘bistro’ slipped into the French language as a result. Every year, on 24 th September, solemn ceremonies are held by the Devil’s Bridge in the Alps to pay tribute to those who died.

Suvorov’s legasy in Russia: Suvorov’s military strategies emphasized speed, surprise and concentration. These principles are still used in military training today. Among the most popular schools for boys in Russia are Suvorov’s Cadet Schools, established in 1943. If you look in a dairy of a cadet, you are bound to find some of Suvorov’s sayings. Suvorov’s words of wisdom proved to be another of his talents- to communicate ideas in an exceptionally clear and concise way.

Do you know any Suvorov’s sayings in Russian? Discipline is the mother of victory. It takes more than arms to defeat an enemy. Fight with skill, not with numbers. To surprise is to conquer. Speed is essential, but haste harmful. Better to go towards danger than to wait for it.
