The most significant place of the cathedral is the place where the assassination of the tsar was committed. Over the fragment of cobble-stone pavement the canopy was constructed, which was supported by columns of the gray-purple jasper. At the top of the canopy, there was a cross of topaz. Under the canopy there are the relics of the cathedral-the part of Catherine Canal and stones of the cobble-stone pavement, where Alexander II was mortally wounded.

On the 30th of October in 1930 the cathedral was closed. During the blockade there was mortuary. After the war an opera-house rented the cathedral and there was a warehouse for its decorations. The cathedral was in scaffolds for a long time that's why people said that the scaffolds would stand while the soviet regime was standing. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but the scaffolds were removed shortly before the August events in the 1991. On the 19 of August in 1997 the memorial museum was opened to public.

According to the legend, after the completion of the magnificent building of the cathedral, its architects were deprived of visual sense , in order not to repeat again their achievement. But this is only a legend and there is no historical evidence of it except the fact that the cathedral is really unique.
