The term Information Warfare (IW) is primarily a United States Military concept involving the use and management of information and communication technology in pursuit of a competitive advantage over an opponent. Information Warfare, which involves operational security, electronic warfare (EW), psychological operations (PSYOPs), deception, physical attack on information processes, and information attack on information processes, is used in order to demoralize or manipulate the enemy and the public, undermining the quality of opposing force information and denial of information-collection opportunities to opposing forces. Many people today are talking about the impact of information technology on the world. They are discussing how business, the economy, education, and even personal relationships are being affected by the onset of the information age. It should come as no surprise, then, that people are also talking about how technology is impacting the way we engage in one of our oldest traditions - war. The term «Information Warfare» has been in use for a number of years now, intended to represent whatever warfare is becoming in the information-centric 21st century. Unfortunately, though, many people use this term without really knowing what it means. In an effort to make progress toward a common definition, this paper presents one possibility and expands on it by discussing the weapons, strategies, and countermeasures involved in «Information Warfare», as defined. The theme of my work is Information Warfare.
In my work I want to point out that Information Warfare can take many forms (the information is found out using scientific encyclopedias):
· television and radio transmission(s) can be jammed
· television and radio transmission(s) can be hijacked for a disinformation campaign
· logistics networks can be disabled
· enemy communications networks can be disabled or spoofed
· stock exchange transactions can be sabotaged, either with electronic intervention, by leaking sensitive information or by placing disinformation
· drones and other surveillance robots
· communication management
The goal of the project:
To investigate the most cruel and admass war of the 21st century and research consequences of Information Warfare by virtue of analyzing its reasons (also, trying to make the problem elucidative).
Tasks of the project
Aim is achieved through the following tasks:
1) to study reasons of Information Warfare;
2) to investigate electronic versions of mass media (The Times, The Guardian, BBC, etc.) and to read literature devoted to the topic;
3) to take opinion polls among different aged people;
4) to make a publication of scientific article (we were working on the internet) in order to increase popularizing the Information Warfare topic;
5) to make booklet.
Problem of my work: «Is Information Warfare the 21st century’s plague or a cruel political game?»
Hypothesis of my project is considering Information War as a cruel political game.
The actuality of the project:
Information Warfare has become an increasingly diverse field. The changes to its composition have been primarily driven by changes in technology and the resulting increased access to information. Further, it has been the progressively more diverse methods available for communication that has fuelled expanding applications for Information Warfare techniques into non-military environments. In order for younger generations of students to understand the place of Information Warfare in the larger security picture, there is a need to shift the emphasis from many of the military underpinnings to its relevance in modern society and the challenges in the commercial environment. This paper provides a platform for discussion of the sphere of Information Warfare and its relevance to contemporary society. Whilst the methods of information operations and the understanding of military origins have not changed, the manner in which the topics are presented and how these relate to today’s corporate environment and increasingly global society have become a new focus. The importance of this is to make Information Warfare relevant to today’s generation of students and to develop information strategists rather than information specialists who can function effectively on a global stage.
