According to one of the historical theories, when the Romans first saw England they called those white chalk cliffs and the land behind them "Albion", meaning a "White Land". Since those times Albion is the poetic name of England. Lake District (or Cumbria ) in Northern England is very famous and its lakes, hills and valleys make it an excellent place for having rest.

Toponymy The name "England" is derived from the Old English name Englaland , which means "land of the Angles". According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first known use of "England" to refer to the southern part of the island of Great Britain occurs in 897, and its modern spelling was first used in 1538.

Mysterious Stonehenge Stonehenge is probably the most recognisable and enigmatic stone circle in Britain. The structure has fascinated people for centuries, and there are many theories as to what purpose it was put to by ancient man. The structure is now surrounded by a fence, which although not aesthetically pleasing is helping to preserve the monument from erosion.

Welcome to London! London is the capital city of England and of the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia, its history going back to its founding by the Romans, who named it Londinium . Architecture London's buildings are too diverse to be characterised by any particular architectural style, partly because of their varying ages. Many grand houses and public buildings, such as the National Gallery, are constructed from Portland stone. I must say that in London one meets the past and the present, the old and the modern. It is a city of contrasts.
