Kyachta is my native town.

Love of Motherland comes to people in different ways. For some people their motherland begins in a city street. For other people it is their own village or a house in which they have grown up. Usually this place is the best place in the world. As the English people say: “East or West home is best” or “There is no place like home” I am not a local citizen, but I spent my childhood there. The history of Kyachta is bound up with the history of Russia. The first mention of Kyachta can be found in the Russian chronicles dated back to the 17th century. Peter the first is famous for drawing Russia father to the East. For this purpose Sava Raguzinsky was sent by Peter the Great. At that time a multi-towered fortress was erected in the south-east of Russia to shield off the Russian land from Mongolian tribes in the south. The fortress was both a fortification and a place of living. Kyachta was founded in 1728 and it was settled by cossacs. By the middle of the 18th century Kyachta developed into a bustling densely-populated city. Later Russia established a trading company in the town. It became the entry way to the Great Silk Way. Russian merchants were trading silk and tea with European countries. The prosperity of the city was based on silk and tea which employed a considerable number of citizens. The present day Kyachta is an unusual city. It looks different from other cities is that no buildings in the city more than 5stored. The majority of the population live in small houses, built close together. A typical house of this kind is built of wood. Russia carpenters were building log-cabins with beautiful carved decoratins above the windows and porches. Wooden architecture predominates in some of the older settlements of Siberia and in Kyachta too. The finest examples of traditional architecture can be seen in churches of Kyachta. You will be impressed by its dombed church of Voskresenskya with its bell tower. One of the best known churches in the style typicalfor Byzantineis situated at the frontier with Mongolia. The city is not densely populated. The population is 50 thousand of people. It has military bases all around the town but little in industry. One of the town”s big attractions is the Local History Museum.The museum has an extensiveand precious collection of flora and fauna. Historically important places can be found in Kyachta connected with the Decembrists. It was the place of exile of the progressive people. Famous people Kozlov, Potanina, Obruchev lived and worked here.

At present the political and economical situation touched our town too. There are a lot of problems in the national economy of our town. The industrial production is decreasing. The prices are constantly rising, rate of inflation is very high. People have lost their jobs, because many factories and plants are bankrupt. But we are sure that there many opportunities of our town for prosperity.
