The history of the Olympic games
The Birthplace of the Olympic games is Ancient Greece, the Greeks worshipped the sanctuary of Olympia, located in the Western part of the Peloponnese. Here at the foot of mount Kronos, in the valley of Alpheus, Olympic flame of the modern Games is still lit.
Legends say that at that time there was a powerful and equally gloomy God Kronos. And there was his unhappy wife - the goddess Rhea. Why was so unhappy great wife of the great God? Legends give this rather nightmarish answer! Some people say that Kronos had a nightmare, others - that he had spoken with some unknown prophetess. But, anyway, Kronos had got it into his head that he would reach death at the hands of one of his children. And Kronos believed it! He was gloomy by nature. Now he became even gloomier. Rather than deal with «the education of the younger generation», Kronos did not invent anything better than to swallow their newborn babies!
It was terrible. Poor Rhea didn't know what to think. And when she had another baby, Zeus, Rhea decided to wrap stone in swaddling clothes and gave it to Kronos. He did not notice it, swallowed the stone.
Zeus grew up and fought a battle with his father and won it. In honor of the great event Zeus organized the first Games in running competition. Thus he celebrated the victory over his father.
The history of the Olympic games goes back to Ancient Greece. They began in 776 B.C. It was a great athletic festival including many different sports. They were organized up to the year of 391. In 394 A. D. the Games stopped. They began only in 1894, a Frenchman Baron Pierre de Coubertin managed to persuade people from fifteen countries to start the Olympic games again.
The Olympic flame Since 1936 the opening ceremony has been celebrated by lightening a flame which is called “Olympic flame”.
