Some years ago our class was lucky to visit the exhibition of Dali’s masterpieces in Moscow. We would like to know more about his life and work.
Few people know my real name Helena Diakonova but the whole world knows me as Gala. The name was given me by my husband Salvador Dali, the most brilliant Surrealist of his time.
To understand the enigma that is Salvador Dali, one should take a look back into his childhood, his family and his inspirations.
I was born in Figueras, Spain on the 11th of May, 1904. Being the only young male in a female-dominated household I was pampered a lot by my mother, grandmother, aunt and nurse. But all this attention was not enough for me and I constantly searched the ways to attract more. I was a naughty boy.
By the age of ten I began to show an interest in art and produced my first painting. I had already set up my own art exhibition before I was 15.
In 1921, a 17-year-old Salvador entered the Madrid Fine Arts School, hoping to fuel his interest in Futurism and Cubism. However, he was suspended for a year after urging all students to rebel against the school authorities. In 1926 he was expelled for similar reasons.
I moved to Paris where I developed an interest in Surrealism, joined the movement and met Palo Picasso for the first time. At that time I also created works that would come to represent was Surrealism was to many people with such works as the famous melting clock «The Persistence of Memory». That year I met her Helena Diakonova, a Russian immigrant, later known as «Gala», my muse, model, inspiration and eventually my reason for living.
In the continuing years he painted less. He began to read ideas of Freud and found new inspiration. He was fascinated with the state of semi-consciousness, the mental state between consciousness and unconsciousness. He wanted to explore it and find a way to portray it in his art.
In 1930s I was absorbed in politics. In 1939 I moved to the USA and participated in the making of several films. I became a great success and attracted commissions from wealthy clients. We spent 8 years in America and returned to Catalonia in Spain.
In 1981 he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
My beloved Gala died the next year. It seemed, my life was falling apart. I lost my inspiration and reason for life. I lost desire to paint.
Dali moved to the castle he had bought for me in Pubol until he was injured under suspicious circumstances by the fire in 1984.
I returned to my hometown of Figueres. I was a wealthy person and understood how to attract media attention. I had two museums dedicated to my life.
Dali died in 1989 when he was 85. He was buried in a tomb below his museum in his hometown in Figueras. His works continue to fetch increasingly high prices in art auctions houses throughout the world nowdays. His contribution to the art world can be seen in modern artists’ works.
