Nowadays almost everyone has a mobile in the city. But if you ask anybody who was the inventor of the first mobile, it is not a simple question to answer. The history of the invention of the first mobile dates back to the middle of the XX century. Bell Laboratories was the first company to offer the creation of a mobile. It was a breakthrough for 1947, but the elaborators were anyway determined to make such a phone only for using in cars. One could hardly imagine to be able to carry a phone of 30-40 kilograms (and this is without any batteries!) In the fifties of the XX century the mobiles began to diminish. By the beginning of the seventies they weighted only 12-14 kilograms though their power supply was done from car’s accumulator. At that time Motorola company was famous for its portable radio stations and did not think about mobiles. In 1954 a new engineer Martin Cooper came to work in the company. He was an ordinary worker and was busy with elaboration of new portable devices. In 1967 his research department created portable radio transmitter for the police of Chicago. Almost 20 years later after 20 years of his career in Motorola Martin Cooper realized his ability to create a quite small mobile. During a year of works for creation the first mobile was done, at the same time Motorola company assured Federal Communication Committee in great necessity of free lines for mobile network. That suggestion was highly doubted even by one of the world’s greatest and most famous laboratory – Bell Laboratories. They could hardly believe in creation of really portable devices in the nearest future. At last they gave a chance for Motorola. The first experiments were arranged on the third of April in 1973. On this day the first base station was assembled on the top of Alliance Capital Building in New York. That first station could serve only 30 clients and connected them with telephone communications. The mobile was called Dyna-Tac. It was a receiver weighted about 1,15 kilograms with rather small dimensions. In the front panel there were 12 buttons, 10 of them were for figures and the rest 2 for sending and canceling a call. There was no display and any additional functions. The accumulator allowed communication about 35 minutes, but needed 10 hours of charge. So Martin Cooper dialed the number of Joel Engel on that telephone in the morning of the 3d of April. It was a great triumph of both Cooper and Motorola. After the press conference the elaborators realized that they had made revolution in communications. Bell Laboratories admitted their success. At that time they used 14 kilograms telephones in cars. And it was obviously a great breakthrough. With the first success Federal Communication Committee gave lines for private companies in the beginning 0f 1974. During the following years the first commercial communications appeared and in early eighties they began to spread all over the world. Martin Cooper became the head of the mobiles research department in Motorola and left it only in 1983 to found his own business. The mobile telephone began its triumph procession on the planet… |
