Isaac Ilyich Levitan , the great Russian artist, became the first painter of the Russian scenery, who revealed all its beauty. He is a real poet of the Russian countryside.

Isaac Levitan was born in a Shtetl of Wirballen in the poor but educated family. At the beginning of 1870 the Levitan family moved to Moscow. In September 1873, Isaac Levitan entered the Moscow school of paintings, Sculpture and Architecture where his older brother Avel had already studied for two years. After a year in the copying class Isaac was transferred in naturalistic class, and soon into a landscape class. Seashore, 1890

In 1875, his mother died, and his father fell seriously ill and became unable to support four children, he died in 1877. The family slipped into abject poverty. As patronage for Levitan's talent and achievements to keep him in the school, he was given a scholarship. Flowering meadow.

Golden Autumn, 1895 One of his most famous paintings was Golden autumn. On the right side we can see small river which flows quietly. In the background we can observe small village.

In the last years of his life Levitan made several journeys abroad to France, Italy and Germany where he painted a number of landscapes, although his best works of the period were devoted to Russia. He was only 40 when he died in 1900.
