Chapter 1
Internet – what is it?
1.1. Internet. Terminology
Internet is a short form of the technical term “interconnected network” the result of interconnecting computer networks with special gateways or routers. The Internet is also often referred to as the Net.
The term the Internet, when referring to the entire global system of IP networks, has been treated as a proper noun and written with an initial capital letter. In the media and popular culture, a trend has also developed to regard it as a generic term or common noun and thus write it as "the internet", without capitalization. Some guides specify that the word should be capitalized as a noun but not capitalized as an adjective.
The terms Internet and World Wide Web are often used in everyday speech without much distinction. However, the Internet and the World Wide Web are not one and the same. The Internet establishes a global data communications system between computers. In contrast, the Web is one of the services communicated via the Internet. It is a collection of interconnected documents and other resources, linked by hyperlinks and URL’s.
1.2. History of an origin of Internet
The internet, a global computer network which embraces millions of users all over the world, began in the United States in 1969 as a military experiment. It was designed to survive a nuclear war. Information sent over the Internet takes the shortest path available from one computer to another. Because of this, any two computers on the Internet will be able to stay in touch with each other as long as there is a single route between them. This technology is called packet swithing. Owing to this technology, if some computers on the network are knocked out (by a nuclear explosion, for example), information will just rout around them. One such packet-swithing network which has already survived a war is the Iraqi computer network which was not knocked out during the Gulf War.
1.3. Internet – what is it?
What is this computer phenomenon called the Internet, or the Net? Do you personally have need of it? Before you decide to get “on” the Internet, you may want to know something about it. Imagine a room filled with many spiders, each spinning its own web. The webs are so interconnected that the spiders can travel freely within this maze. You now have a simplified view of the Internet—a global collection of many different types of computers and computer networks that are linked together. Just as a telephone enables you to talk to someone on the other side of the earth who also has a phone, the Internet enables a person to sit at his computer and exchange information with other computers and computer users anyplace in the world.
Some refer to the Internet as the information superhighway. Just as a road allows travel through different areas of a country, so the Internet allows information to flow through many different interconnected computer networks. As messages travel, each network that is reached contains information that assists in connecting to the adjacent network. The final destination may be in a different city or country.
Each network can “speak” with its neighbor network by means of a common set of rules created by the Internet designers. Worldwide, how many networks are connected? Some estimates say over 30,-000. According to recent surveys, these networks connect over 10,000,000 computers and some 30,000,000 users throughout the world. It is estimated that the number of connected computers is doubling each year. Most of the Internet host computers (more than 50%) are in the United States, while the rest are located in more than 100 other countries. Although the number of host computers can be counted fairly accurately, nobody knows exactly how many people use the Internet, there are millions worldwide, and their number is growing by thousands each month The most popular Internet services are Instant Messages (IM), IRC and social networks. Most of the people, who have access to the Internet, use the network only for sending and receiving instant messages. In many developing countries the Internet may provide businessmen with a reliable alternative to the expensive and unreliable telecommunications systems of these countries. Commercial users can communicate cheaply over the Internet with the rest of the world. When they send messages over Internet, they only have to pay to their local service providers, not for calls across their countries or around the world. But who actually pays for sending instant messages over the Internet long distances, around the world? The answer is very simple: users pay their service provider a monthly or hourly fee. Part of this fee goes toward its costs to connect to a larger service provider, and part of the fee received by the larger provider goes to cover its cost of running a worldwide network of wires and wireless stations.
What can people locate on the Internet? It offers a rapidly growing collection of information, with topics ranging from medicine to science and technology. It features exhaustive material on the arts as well as research material for students and coverage of recreation, entertainment, sports, shopping, and employment opportunities. The Internet provides access to almanacs, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and maps.
There are, however, some disturbing aspects to consider. Can everything on the Internet be regarded as wholesome? What services and resources does the Internet offer? What precautions are in order?
Chapter 2
Internet – pros and cons
2.1.Advantages
First of all, Internet provides access to a lot of information. Some of them are very useful in your job other helps in your hobby. Searching the net with Google, you can find everything you want. You can also do shopping using Internet. Of course it has no sense to buying a roll, but if you need something inaccessible, you will be able to buy it in Internet shop. You need only to select what you want, fill in some forms and click OK. In a few days you will get what you have ordered directly to your home, without going anywhere. You can pay with your credit card, pay postman when you get the package, or transfer money from your bank account. Nowadays almost every bigger bank offers transferring money with Internet. It is more faster then going to the bank and filling blankets. Transferring money in traditional way takes about a day, using Internet you can do this in few seconds even in Saturday and Sunday evenings. What’s more Internet banks give you insurance against unauthorized transaction.
Next advantage of Internet is using e-mail and instant messages. Internet mails get in a few seconds in their destinations. It is very important when you want to send something for example to Australia. Of course you can send not only texts. You can email whatever you want, movies, photos, songs, computer programs etc. Costs are very important advantage of emails. Sending an email is much cheaper then phoning, or sending normal letters. In fact, Internet has replaced mobiles and faxes because it’s cheaper and with more options .Actually, innovations are going on to make it faster, more reliable. Moreover we can explore other cultures of different countries and make friends from all over the world. So Internet turns the world into a global village.
Entertainment is another popular reason why many people prefer to surf the Internet. Downloading games, visiting chat rooms or just surfing the Web are some of the uses people have discovered. There are numerous games that may be downloaded from the Internet for free. When people surf the Web, there are numerous things that can be found. Music, hobbies, news and more can be found and shared on the Internet
As a student or a pupil, we always deal with the Internet. We search for information from Internet to complete our assignment. It is faster and save a lot of our time. Moreover, we can exchange and share information by sending what we have found to our friends through e-mail.
2.2. Disadvantages
What are disadvantages of using Internet? There are many reasons why the Internet is so controversial.
Information is probably the biggest advantage internet is offering. You can almost find any type of data on almost any kind of subject that you are looking for. Students and children are among the top users who surf the Internet for research.
However, here there is a danger. The problem with the Internet today is the fact that anyone can access just about anything they want to from it. For example, pornography is a big issue because children are accessing adult content so easily without anyone having to know about it and that has bad effects on the behavior of the children.
The Internet has had security problems since it’s earliest days . Virus is a main threat of computer’s security. Computers attached to internet are more vulnerable to virus attacks and they can end up into crashing the whole hard disk. Internet security
Internet addiction. Many people and especially the young spend a lot of their time surfing the net. It become sometimes an addiction that many people neglect their studies or work to spend many hours chatting .In fact a lot of teenagers are obsessed by chat websites like facebook and they waste their time on it.
Electronic messages sent over the Internet can be easily snooped and tracked, revealing who is talking to whom and what they are talking about. If you use the Internet, your personal information such as your name, address, credit card, bank details and other information can be accessed by culprits. If you use a credit card or internet banking for online shopping, then your details can also be ‘stolen’.
To summarise, Internet is an indisponsable tool nowadays as it connect people, entertain them and provide them with information of the latest news but it still have its inconvenients such as addiction, security problems and pornography .

Conclusion.
the Internet obviously has both good and bad points. Fortunately, the system is improving all the time, and any problems which still exist can be solved. Whether we like it or not, the Internet is here to stay, so we have to make the best possible use of it. Do you Really Need the Internet?
SHOULD you use the Internet? Of course, this is a personal matter, one that you should weigh carefully. What factors might influence your decision?
Using the Internet offers many advantages. For example, all of the latest information is available to you, in your home, at any hour of the day or night. It is much faster and easier to surf the net in search of information from all over the world than to travel to libraries in dozens of countries. Also, on-line shopping makes it possible to search through catalogues to find exactly what you want at the best price, saving both time and money. By joining a newsgroup or chat group, you can share your hobbies and special interests, and perhaps make friends all over the world. Finally, e-mail, Skype, IRC, social networks and other Instant Message services are popular because it is faster than sending a letter and cheaper than a telephone conversation.
On the other hand, the Internet has several disadvantages. Firstly, with so much information available, finding what you want can take you hours. Multimedia web pages with photographs, music and video are attractive, but they make downloading slow and boring. What is more, there is too much advertising instead of real information. As for Internet friendships, sitting at home in front of a computer making 'chat friends' is not the same as actually meeting people.

In conclusion, the Internet obviously has both good and bad points. Fortunately, the system is improving all the time, and any problems which still exist can be solved. Whether we like it or not, the Internet is here to stay, so we have to make the best possible use of it.
Internet is a knife with double edge . In fact, this magic tool can cause serious problems for us if we don’t use it conciously. So, it depends on our intention in using it.
