The blue whale is the largest mammal in the world and the largest animal ever known to have lived on our planet.

Female blue whales are larger than males. They can be more than 80 metres long and weigh 200 tons.

Blue whales are among the loudest animals on the planet. Their calls are so loud that they can hear each other up to 1600 kilometres away. However, some of their loud sounds are so low in frequency that people cannot hear them without special equipment. Scientists think that blue whales use these calls to communicate with each other.

Only a few thousand blue whales are believed to swim the world’s oceans. They are one of the most endangered species in the world. They were hunted for many years for their oil, and they were almost hunted to extinction.

In 1929 and 1930, for example, whalers managed to kill 30000 Antarctic blue whales.

The mammals became a protected species in the 1960s. Today, they seem to be growing in numbers. But although it’s good news, scientists know, they’re not out of danger yet.
