Introduction
«Reading is the best learning», said A. Pushkin many years ago. He was right. A book is a source of knowledge, wisdom, humanity and kindness. People read books for different purposes. Some read for information, others read for fun or just to spend their free time.
Books are different – they are fiction, non fiction, science fiction, biographies, detectives or spy stories, historic books. Some people read many reference books – encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, maps, periodicals (newspapers and magazines), essays and so on.
The world of books is enormous; a book is one of the greatest wonders of the world. It gives us a unique chance to link up with authors who lived hundreds and thousands of years ago. Thanks to books we can talk to people who lived in different ages and countries. While reading books we hear voices, thoughts and feelings of those people who lived hundreds of years ago.
URGENCY OF THE PROBLEM
Nowadays in Russia the status and the attitude to reading are changing because of many causes in the life of our society. From the period of the 1990s, gradually literary traditions have disappeared in our country. According to the Vtsiom, 34% of adults have not already read. This process is including the children.
The high status of reading in many social groups of people cut down.
Teachers are worried about using of pupils’ primitive stamps. The pupils do not learn the language of the classical literature, but learn a variety of clichés; they prefer formal language to classical literature. Not only is the culture of reading losing but also the culture of speech. Schoolchildren, students write tests, addressing to the unknown authors. People stopped going to the libraries. TV programs about reading of literary works, discussions, writing activities were gone from the central channels.
The vocabulary doesn’t develop. In the children’s life the heroes of literary classics have disappeared
At the same time, the impact of "e-culture" to reading is becoming stronger. That’s why not only the specialists begin worrying. In modern society books have become overshadowed by cinema, TV, video as entertainment, and by computers as a source of information. Of course, computers offer a much more perfect and economical way of getting information.
Now when the internet has become a global source of information many people believe that all the answers to all the questions can be found in the internet.
What is it? Fashion? An error?
The main problem is that, as the writer Yuri Polyakov said, fashion to reading had gone.
In recent years there has been and is developing the myth that the children stopped reading at leisure time, play computer games. There are a lot of topics devoted to many of the articles in the mass MEDIA. "To Replace the computer book?", "Is ousting the reading of electronic means of mass communication", "Children are no longer read" - these and other statements, having under a number of quite objective reasons, have become concerned about the broad public.
I’ve chosen this topic because I want to know if there is a place for a book in the pupils’ life, if a book has a future life, if the students can imagine a day without reading.
Today we especially must know the real picture of the teenagers' reading. This information would be based not only on emotions and personal experience, but would have real grounds.
THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH
The creation of full and clear picture of the pupils’ reading interests at our school for the development of a program for improving the reading interests of schoolchildren is the aim of my research.
THE TASKS OF THE RESEARCH
The following tasks were set.
Plan of the research.
1. Carry out a questionnaire for getting information
2. Get and analyze the reader's interests of the pupils of the school. Make up a table.
3. Convince students in the great role of the book for the modern student.
4. Identify the causes of the decline in interest of pupils to read.
5. Determine the ratio of students to reading and books.
6. Establish the real picture of the students’ reading interests of the school.
7. Visit a town library, discuss and learn pupils’ reading interests at our town
8. Create a Program for improving the reading interests of schoolchildren
The main part
IS THERE A PLACE FOR A BOOK IN OUR LIFE
A book itself and the phenomenon of reading are among the fundamental achievements of the human mind. It is proved that fifty thousands of human generations spent more than two trillion person-years to understand the world, to know the forces of nature, synthesize colorful and diverse knowledge. The most powerful tool in these explorations and discoveries was the word. Word and thought together created a book. Reading today is highly recognized by the world community: the United Nations declared 2003 - 2012 years as decades of reading. “Reading makes a full man” said F. Bacon
I agree with him. I think that books play a very important role in our life. And now I will try to prove it.
Firstly, how do you imagine a life without books? It’s boring and uninteresting! How can you sit all day in front of computers or TV sets?
And the book is the key to knowledge. You will learn a lot of new and useful things while reading. Even the ancients said: "People no longer think, when no longer read."
Secondly, the book develops the mind. It is so interesting to learn about the past, to see the battles of the kings, hiking, war, geographical and scientific research, learn about the history of other countries and to know the culture and religion of other nations.
Thirdly, the book develops imagination. How great it is sometimes to imagine yourself as a Greek hero or a scientist, a pharaoh or the queen of Egypt! It’s interesting to visit other countries and cities, a catholic church, the protestant church or the orthodox cathedral.
Fourthly, the book helps us make the right decisions. Sometimes looking at the heroes of the book, we find their mistakes and learn to avoid them in our life.
Fifthly, reading helps to enrich both oral and written speech. We enrich our vocabulary, and become a more interesting person.
I think that I was able to prove you that the book is a valuable thing. They are necessary to people and play an important role in the life of the person, because they teach us, give advice, with the help of books we grow and learn the world.
And what about the students of our school? What do they think about the role of books and reading? Does a book play a very important part in their life?
To answer these questions a questionnaire was conducted in forms: 3a, 8b, 10a. (Appendix 1.)
The information was analyzed.
1. Materials and methods of research
We’ll rely on the results of our research among the students of SCHOOL 3.
73 pupils from 3, 8 and 10 forms took part in the research.
2. Peculiarities of the pupils’ reading during a day
In 2007 the newspaper "Komsomolskaya pravda" published the rating of the UNESCO - how many hours a week people of different countries read a book. Here it is:
1. India - 10.7
2. Thailand - by 9.4
3. China - 8,9
4. Philippines - 7,5
5. Egypt - 7,5
6. Czech Republic - 7,4
7. Russia - 7
8. Sweden - 6,9
9. France - 6,9
10. Hungary - 6,8
If in the soviet times, our country was the most reading in the world, then at the present time it takes the 7-th place. The most reading countries in the world in the modern history are India and Thailand.
The question: "How much time a day do you play reading?" – was given to the students of the school.
The results of the answers are in table 1.
Table 1. Peculiarities of the pupils’ reading during a day
Number of reading a day | 3 form (25pup.) | 8 form (23pup.) | 10 form(25 pup.)
Boys. | Girls | Boys. | Girls. | Boys. | Girls
30 min. | 1 | 3 | 2 | 4 | 3 | 1 |
1hour | 4 | 4 | 5 | 2 | 3 | 6 |
2hours | 5 | 4 | 4 | 5,7 | 4,6 | 6,5 |
According to our results, the boys and girls read during a day. 1/5 of all teenagers spend 30 minutes a day. 1/3 of the boys and girls have been reading for a half and an hour. About 42% have been reading for more than an hour a day.
According to the results the majority of children and teenagers read at leisure time. Only the fifth part of the respondents spends up to 30 minutes a day. One third of the interviewed children and teenagers read from half an hour to an hour. About 42% of the pupils read more than one hour a day. Thus, most of the students of our school read at their leisure time.
3. Learning the teenagers’ attitude to reading
As it is known, the majority of people do not know how to read, and many don't know really, why they should read. Some people consider reading as the difficult but important part of education. For others, reading is a funny way to spare free time, and they do not think what to read.
The question: "Do you like reading?" was asked to the students.
The results of the answers are in table 2.
Тable 2. Teenagers’ attitude to reading
Teenagers’ attitude to reading | 3 form (25 p.) | 8 form(23 pup.) | 10 form(25 pup.)
Boys | Girls | Boys. | Girls. | Boys | Girls
I like reading a lot. I read a lot. | 4,8 | 5,9 | 2 | 4 | 1,2 | 3 |
I read seldom. I don’t like reading. | 2 | 0 | 5 | 2 | 1,2 | 3 |
We see that junior pupils read a lot - 43%, but in the 10th form – only 17%.
Junior pupils read little - 8%, senior pupils -17%.
In the whole the pupils read at the school. We see: the older pupils are the less they read. Attitudes towards reading is an important characteristic, and it testifies to the fact that, in general we can see the positive attitude of schoolchildren to reading
4. Peculiarities of the pupils’ spending free time
Reading is a useful pastime because on the one hand it gives many moments of joy and pleasure; on the other hand it develops readers’ mind and characters. As the proverb says “Books are best teachers” and it’s really true, because books teach us to be noble, intelligent, industrious, to love nature, to understand other people’s feelings. Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. It enriches people’s mind and imagination.
A well- known cosmonaut В.Севастьянов said: "For me, a good book is, first of all, the teacher, which adds knowledge, companion, with whom I can argue". The words of astronaut once again prove the importance of reading books for the man. Now people can get information through the internet, television. And they spend a lot of time watching TV, playing computer games. My classmates like spending their free time together with their friends.
Students were asked to answer the question "What is your favorite way of spending your free time?”
The results of the answers are in table 3.
Table 3.
According to our research, the crisis of reading at our school is obvious. Reading takes only the 4th place among the students of 8-10 grades.
In modern world teenagers have many opportunities to choose one or another way of leisure activities. To some extent, an alternative reading is the new media. This is a different means of mass communication and electronic mass-media. That is, children, teenagers, youth and the young people of today’s world are the most active social groups who choose new information technologies.
Another feature of modern young people’s life is the desire to play on the computer. Such an opportunity is given to them at school, home, with friends, in computer clubs.
5. Analysis of reader's interests of pupils
It’s rather difficult to give advice on reading. People’s interests are different, one enjoys reading romantic novels, other think they are boring and are keen on memories and biographies, still other enjoy poetry and find it marvelous. There are books which have been our great favorites since childhood, we grow up with them, and they stay in our memory for ever. Among these books are poems and fairy – tales written by A. Pushkin, S. Marshak and many others. The most favorite pastime from the early childhood of my parents was books. They were fairy tales with the pictures, and then, as I grew older, I began to read them myself. Then I read stories by Chekhov, Gorky, Turgenev, and PUSHKIN.
To identify the level of literary taste of children of our town we went to Ershov City library.
The library is a huge world of knowledge. Here lies the heart of the book. In an interview with the librarian Khanina Svetlana Alexandrovna we received interesting information, which we presented in the form of tables 4, 5.
Таble 4. The main characteristics of Ershov city library.
The number of readers in our city systematically falls, reading has become not prestigious. Only 6 % of 1046 children are active readers of the library. Changed the structure of the reading: the kids come to the special and reference literature, i.e. the prevailing business reading.
Таble 5. Analysis of reader's interests of pupils at our town
|
|
The number of the readers among the teens in our town is reducing. Only 6 % of 1046 teens are active readers. When kids are not reading historical books, 75 per cent of teen girls reported reading magazines dedicated to fashion and beauty. Nearly half of the boys surveyed read magazines about video games, while 24 per cent read computer / electronics manuals. Teenagers enjoy reading for fun and would read more if they had time.
Conclusion
SUMMING UP
Sometimes there are voices that the book has no future, that its educational role will be performed by the cinema, the television, the computer. We can’t agree with these statements. On the contrary, modern computer technology has become a friend and assistant of the reader, it does not replace the printed word, but only complement to it.
We can see in general the positive attitude of schoolchildren to reading.
In the early age 43% of children while 17 % of the 10th form students read. The students of the school understand, that the civilized, cultured man always has a taste for reading, his favorite book, with which he can not only spend his leisure time, but makes him think, becomes a friend.
Reading is the best teaching. About 42% of respondents read more than one hour a day. Only the fifth part of the respondents read up to 30 minutes a day. Thus, most of the students of our school are reading at leisure time.
However, the study also showed that there are very serious changes in the reading of children today. As the survey shows, reading takes the 4th place, while the TV, computer, communication with friends are popular especially among the students of 8-10 grades.
Only 6 % of the students from 1046 children are active readers of the library. With regard to the repertoire of reading teenagers in general, the study of reader's interests of pupils shows that about 40% of it consists mostly of literature entertainment nature, then as a scientific-educational books occupy half as many (21%).
Modern children and teenagers have very different preferences and different perception of book culture. They relate to the book, not as the "book of life", and as one of the means of information and mass communication.
MY SUGGESTIONS
Creating a real picture of pupils’ reading at the school help us to enrich the students’ reading interests, to develop reader's activities, skills and reading skills of students, reading culture, information literacy. We offer the program, which would include:
1.the creation of the school literary club for the students of the 9-10th forms,
2. a circle called "the Green lamp" for the students of middle ages,
3. the organization of debates and discussions,
4. library lessons for pupils of junior school.
5. beneficial influence on the development of children's reading skills have a school literary-creative actions: a Week of children's and youth's book;
6.contest "the Leader of the reader";
7.rating-survey on the topic of "Hundred best books of the year".
The important role in the organization of these events is given to the youth organization of the school named " The Unity”, the school library and, of course, to the students themselves.
The book does not go away, and reading as well. However, we would like to emphasis otherwise: it is not in the kind of tool will be selected book or a computer, where will be a text on paper or on the screen of the monitor, the other thing: what exactly is there to be read, as it will be a process of perception and understanding of the text and what information, what knowledge, what kind of culture and art will be of different types of media for the development of the young person.
