B iography Gabrielle Chanel Bonheur was born to an unwed mother, Jeanne Devolle, a laundrywoman, in 19 August 1883 . The father, Albert Chanel was an itinerant street peddler . He married Jeanne Devolle several years after Chanel was born. In 1895 , when Chanel was twelve years old, Chanel’s mother died . Her father sent Chanel to Aubazine , convent for orphans .

B iography At the age of eighteen Chanel went to live in a boarding house for Catholic girls in the town of Moulins. Having learned the sewing arts during her six years at Aubazine, Chanel was able to find seamstress work . I n her spare time she sang in a cabare t. She was popular with visitors for the execution of two very funny songs : « Ko Ko Ri Ko » and « Qui qu a vu Coco?» F or this she received the nickname Coco, having fixed for life.

B lossoming career Chanel became a licensed hat maker in 1910 and opened a boutique named Chanel Modes . Chanel's modiste career bloomed once theatre actress Gabrielle Dorziat modelled her hats in the play Bel Ami in 1912 .
