  2. The city of foreigners.
  3. Deceptive luxury.
  4. The place where you can touch the history of the cinema.
  5. The dark side of the city.
  6. The main business of the city.
  7. From the history of the city.
  8. The diversity of names.

  1. Los Angeles is the largest city in the state of California and the second most populous city in the United States. The Los Angeles area, which includes the city itself and its suburbs, as a population of 13.6 million. Los Angeles ‘s nicknames are LA and the City of Angels. Some people also call it “La-La-Land” because they think the city is full of strange and crazy people.  The inhabitants of Los Angeles are called Angelenos. Los Angeles is often called “the entertainment capital of the world”
  2. The largest and most famous entertainment industries in LA are television and film production., so the city is full of celebrities and wannabe actors who come here hoping to attract attention of some Hollywood big shot. Hollywood is still the centre of American film industry, though many studios have moved out of it. The famous Hollywood sign is known all over the world. Each letter in the sign is 15.2 m tall.
  3. Los Angeles is a multicultural city. About 100 languages can be heard on its streets. It has the largest number of Mexicans outside Mexico, Koreans outside Seoul and Iranians outside Teheran. There are some areas in LA where it seems that you are not in an English-speaking country  at all. Little Tokyo, for example, has Japanese Buddhist temples, Japanese shops, karaoke clubs, sushi bars and rock gardens. In Little India you can find saris and sitars. There is even Little Russia in Los Angeles where everyone speaks Russian.
  4. One striking thing about LA is that it doesn’t seem to have a city at all. It keeps growing and spreading in all directions, even out into the deserts! It seems that nobody walks in Los Angeles ; there are a lot of beautiful cars driven by beautiful people. But with so many cars LA  has the dirtiest air in the US. The sunshine is hidden by the smog.
  5. LA’s most important streets, Sunset Boulevard, is about 40 km long. Its most famous stretch, the Sunset Strip, passes through Hollywood. The Strip is known for its bright billboards and chic restaurants where the waiters are really wannabe actors or singers or scriptwriters. There are also modern apartment buildings with pools and palm trees but inside there are often six or more young hopefuls living together in two rooms to save money on rent.
  6. Universal Studios in Hollywood is one of the most amazing places on earth. Not only does it have a theme park but it’s also a working studio. A tram tour takes you past film sets where movies are being filmed and you can also see a lot of Hollywood history, including Alfred Hitchcock’s old studio offices and the set where they filmed part of Jaws and the Jurassic Park. You can even bump into Steven Spielberg or Jonny Depp  on their way to work… or to lunch (contrary to what their agents say, the stars are human, they have to eat)
  7. LA is an exciting city but it’s also a dangerous place to live in. There are over 1300 street gangs in LA with over 16000 members. Most gangs exist in poor, rundown areas and most gang members are young people. Teenagers join gangs because they want to have money and because there’s nothing else to do where they live. Joining a gang gives them a sense of belonging and being a part  of something important. Gangs are responsible for such crimes as theft, vandalism, drug smuggling and even a murder.

  8. Famous Etonians

  1. Eton College has educated  boys (there are no girls at Eton) for nearby six centuries! Eton is a very old school. It was founded  by King Henry VI (who was only 18 at that time). Henry ‘s aim was to give education to 70 poor boys so that they could then go to Cambridge University (which was founded at the same time). He wrote that the chosen boys should “have a good character, be good at reading , Latin grammar and singing
  2.  A lot of world-known people have been to Eton, including the novelists Henry Fielding, George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, Percy Shelley and Ian Fleming, 18 British prime ministers, and, in recent years, Prince William and Prince Harry. Two important Etioians in British politics today are David Cameron, the leader of the Conservative Party and Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London. Men who have been educated at Eton are called “ Old Etonians”  and they often want to send their sons to Eton, too
  3. Just like Harry Potter’s Hogwarts, Eton is a boarding school where boys live and study away from home. Each boy has his own small room with a bed and desk which he can decorate as he likes (within limits, of course)  and where he can entertain his friends. Having your own room from the first day at school (even if you are only 13) is central to Eton’s philoshophy. The teachers want their students to think independently and take responsibility for themselves.
  4. When a boy comes to Eton he joins a “house” of 50 boys. This house will be hub of his life for next five years. Each house is under the care of a house master, who looks after the boys, supports them and, if necessary , makes sure they behave themselves. The house master is supported by a dame, who looks after the boys’ health and helps them with personal matters. There are a  number of important senior boys enjoys his time in the house and takes part in Eton’s activities.
  5. Students wear a strange old-fashioned school uniform. It consists of black tailcoat (or morning coat), black pin-striped trousers, a black waistcoat, well-polished black shoes, a false-collar and white tie. This uniform is not far special occasions. It is worn at all times and if you visit Eton, you’ll see the boys walking around the campus in these strange clothes. In the past Eton students also wore a top-hat and a walking-cane.
  6. With its combination of excellent teachers and small classes, Eton gives its students a very good education. A personal tutor looks after the progress of every boy. When students leave Eton, they usually go to top universities, such as Oxford or Cambridge. Although the college looks old-fashioned, it is very well-equipped and has state-of-the-art laboratories. Every boy has a lap-top computer, and a network connects all classrooms and all boys ‘ bedrooms to the Internet.
  7. Languages are very important at Eton. Every boy takes at least two modern languages chosen from French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. Students also study Latin for at least one year and many choose to study Greek as well. Outside the main timetable they may choose Chinese or Arabic. The academic year starts at the end of September and has three terms. The year finishes with the exams in early June.
