Reading Tests for the 9th Form

Test 1

Read the text «Thomas Jefferson, Architect» and match its parts with the appropriate titles. There is one title you don’t need to use.

  1. More than 40 Years to Build a House
  2. Establishing a New Educational Institution
  3. Dissatisfaction with the American Colonial Architecture
  4. Jefferson’s Political Career
  5. A man of Various Talents
  6. An Unusual Name for the Construction Site in America
  7. The First Building Untypical of the Colonial Architecture
  8. Gaining European Experience in Architecture

                              Thomas Jefferson, Architect

You probably know that Thomas Jefferson was one of American early Presidents. But he was also the first American architect to become world famous.

  1. When Jefferson was young, there were no architects in colonies. The settlers built their own houses, which were mostly box-shaped and considered ugly by Jefferson. Pictures of ancient Greek and Roman buildings in Europe fascinated him. He began to study the writings of European architects, especially those of Andrea Palladio.
  2. After finishing college, Jefferson became a lawyer. When he was not practicing law, he was working on the design of the house he planned to build for himself. He had already chosen the place. It was called Monticello, which is an Italian world meaning «little mountain».
  3. In 1768 he began to level the mountain top. He cut trees to clear a road and saved timber to use as beams in the house. He made bricks from the hard red clay dug up for the foundation. The first part of the house was a small, one-room brick building. Jefferson and his wife moved into this  room shortly after their marriage. But Monticello was not completed until after Jefferson left the Presidency in 1809.
  4. In  1784  Jefferson  was sent to Europe to set up trade agreements with European countries. He studied the buildings of Paris and travelled to see other buildings in other European cities. These travels changed some of his ideas about architecture.
  5. Before going to Europe, Jefferson had begun the design for a building that was to be the State Capitol in Richmond, Virginia .While in France, he was asked to send home plans for the new building. Jefferson imagined the building that would look like an ancient Roman temple. He worked with a French architect and then sent finished plans and a plaster model to Richmond. The State  Capitol was completed in 1792. It was the first building in the USA modeled after an  ancient Roman temple. Later this style became very popular.
  6. Jefferson spent most of his last  years creating the University of Virginia. He urged the state to start  a public university and to play for its constriction. His work at the university enabled him to combine his love of education with his love of architecture. He designed  all the buildings. He planned the courses. He hired the teachers and bought the books. The university opened in March, 1825. Jefferson was its first Head.
  7. In July, 1826, Thomas Jefferson died. He is best remembered as a great President and the author of the Declaration of Independence. But he is also famous for being the foremost American architect of his time.

My name is Bob. I’m fifteen so I belong to that group. There are many problems, which are common for all young people. For example: how to spend free time, what to do after finishing school, how to deal with the classmates and parents. The problem number one is the problem of fathers and sons. All teens want to be independent, we don’t like when our parents try to rule every step of our life. Our parents don’t like our clothes and our music. They often try to treat us like small children. But if you really want to solve this problem you must try to understand each other.

2

My name is Denis.I have got a question.. please answer.. Lately I have been feeling different things. One day I will be all upset over nothing.. little things will bother me. Or everything that happens will bother me. I felt like killing myself so badly a couple of days ago. But then the next day I was fine and I even felt happy. I dont get it. One day i'm really upset and wanting to try drugs and drink, smoke anything. Then the next day i'm fine. I was thinking that I'm just going through some stage. Just being a normal teenager. I'm right arent i? I'm asking because in one of my classes. The teacher said that signs of depression were thought of suicide, wanting to try new things (drugs, alcohol), being rebelious, even ditching friends, being moody around them. I have experienced all of these, but not for long periods. Just I go in and out of these. The only thing is he said long periods of time. So i'm fine right and i have nothing to worry about? Please answer me. I'm so totally confused. Please give me any info you can. And please dont put a subject on it. I really dont want my mom to read it. Thanks a lot

3

Hi, my name is Alice and I'm 15.

I know that having low self-confidence and stuff at my age is normal, but I was wondering if there is anything I could do about the following problems?

These are the main problems:

- insomnia that comes and goes

- I am extremely self-conscious

- I cry all the time but I don't really know why, sometimes it is so bad I have to stay off school

- I ALWAYS think I have failed tests and done badly at things, although this is rarely true

- irrational feelings of terror about normal things like taking trains, meeting friends etc.

- I occasionally throw up my food

- I am very anti-social and painfully shy; I hate making phone-calls and being in a large group of people

There is no real reason for all of this, I experienced some bullying in my previous school and have never really had many friends, but i am intelligent and reasonably pretty.

I know that I don't have a serious problem but any help would be appreciated!

Reading Comprehension (20 marks)

Read the article below and then answer the questions that follow.

Online shopping allows consumers to shop in the convenience of their own home, and to save travelling time to retail stores and spend their time on other important tasks and hobbies.  Researchers indicate convenience as the ‘primary objective’ of online shopping.  This is relevant to 72% of online shoppers’ claim that they would rather surf online than go to retail stores to get information about a product.  According to a study, 72% of online shoppers chose convenience over privacy.  In addition to the ease of finding products online and time saved, consumers can shop without time limitations with 24 hour access as a beneficial characteristic of online shopping.

Online shopping benefits both the society as a whole and individuals.  The society can save human resources when consumers help themselves by browsing freely online instead of asking for assistance from vendors.  Consumers are also freed from the pressure to buy from the vendors and can spend more time to make wise purchase decisions.

Consumers desire a variety of products because they look for the right product that will fully satisfy them.  There is an infinite variety of products available online and the internet allows consumers to browse through products that are made all around the world without geographical boundaries.

With the online tools that enable product comparison, consumers can compare product prices and features to make a better decision with less effort.

One of the numerous disadvantages of online shopping is that many shoppers enjoy shopping with others and it is often a good way to make social connections.  When shopping independently online, that enjoyment is lost.

Privacy is the number one reason that non-online shoppers do not shop online.  Almost 95% of Web users have declined to provide personal information to Web sites at one time or another when asked.

Because one needs money to buy a computer and to have internet connection, online shopping seems to be limited to people with a reasonable amount of income.  Also since it is harder to learn to use computers at an older age, elderly people tend to shop at traditional retail stores.  Another reason some people do not shop on line is that they are worried that the products will not be what they have expected by viewing online.
