ТЕКСТ для АУДИРОВАНИЯ

Interviewer: Good afternoon everybody! Today we are pleased to have one of the World Wildlife Fund Australia members, Mr. Jack Reed, as our guest.

Jack Reed: Good afternoon.

Interviewer: Mr. Reed, how long have you been working for WWF-Australia?

Jack Reed: Well, I came to the Fund in 2000 and have been with it for almost 12 years.

Interviewer: That’s a lot of time, I should say. So please, tell us about your work. What is the field you focus on?

Jack Reed: I deal with the problems of marine protection. We’re trying to create the so-called “marine sanctuaries”.

Interviewer: Could you tell us more about that?

Jack Reed: Marine sanctuaries are needed to protect Australia’s unique marine life. They provide a safe haven for commercial fish stocks as well as endangered species and offer alternative sources of income for local people, such as tourism. Marine parks act as an insurance policy for the future both for marine life and local people.

Interviewer: That’s really interesting. But I am sure that WWF can’t deal with such a big problem alone.

Jack Reed: Well, as part of this commitment WWF-Australia has joined  “Save Our Marine Life”, a collaboration of global national and state-based environmental organizations to help secure the future of Australia’s south west marine environment. Together we focus on helping to establish a world class network of sanctuaries around Australia to ensure threatened marine life is protected and fish stocks recover from threats such as overfishing. We are also focused on improving water quality from land based pollution for the Great Barrier Reef. As well as actively campaigning on sustainable fishing, marine turtle protection and the protection of the gentle giants of the ocean — whales.

Interviewer: I also hear that you are trying to protect the Coral Sea as well?

Jack Reed:  Exactly

Interviewer: What is so unusual about the Coral Sea? I think that this name is not familiar for some of our listeners.

Jack Reed:  Australia’s Coral Sea, near the Great Barrier Reef, is one of the last remaining tropical wilderness areas in the world. But this majestic “Serengeti of the Sea” faces an uncertain future. WWF wants the Australian Government to declare the Coral Sea a “Marine Protected Area”, to safeguard this underwater sanctuary for future generations. For more information you can visit our website and probably join us!

Interviewer: I am sure that our listeners got interested in all the things you do to make sure that our future generations will enjoy the beauty of Australian nature and sea life. Thank you very much for this conversation and good luck with your work!

Jack Reed: Thank you.

                                                         Tea – leaves.

Many years ago people didn’t know about tea in European countries. Many people didn’t  even know the word “tea”, though drinking was very popular in the East.

Once a young sailor came back from India. He returned from a far-away country & brought his mother a gift. He brought her a box of tea. The old woman didn’t know anything about tea, but she liked the smell, & invited all her friends to come & try it. When her guests arrived, she invited them to the dining table. The old woman gave them  cakes & fruit & tea-leaves.

When the sailor entered the room & saw a big plate with the tea-leaves, he understood everything. He smiled when he saw his mother’s friends. They were eating tea-leaves with butter & salt. They pretended they liked it, but it was clear they didn’t enjoy eating the leaves.

“Where is the tea, Mother?” the sailor asked. His mother pointed to the plate in the middle of the table. “No, this is only the leaves of the tea,” the sailor said. “Where is the water?”

“The water?” his mother said. “I didn’t know what to do & threw the water away, of course.”

  1. Mike thought his job was boring.
  2. Big Jim never bought a ticket when he got on the bus.
  3. At first, Mike wasn`t afraid of Big Jim.
  4. Mike worked hard so he would be ready to make Big Jim pay.
  5. Mike and Big Jim had a fight.
  6. Big Jim used a bus pass, not single ticket.

Big Jim

Mike was proud to wear the uniform of a bus driver. He felt good when he helped people. And he liked driving all around the town and the countryside. He wasn`t a big man, but he was one of the best bus drivers in the city.

One day, Mike went to the bus station as usual. As always, he started his bus but drove along his usual way. For the first few stops, everything was normal. A few people got on his bus. Mike took their money and gave them their tickets.  A few people got off the bus. Then, when Mike got to the bus stop on Elm Road, a huge man was waiting for the bus. The man was tall and his long arms were full of muscles. He stepped up onto the bus. He looked at Mike and said, `I`m Big Jim. Big Jim doesn`t pay.` Then he sat at the back of the bus.  Mike was surprised about this, and he was also upset. But Jim was so big, Mike wasn`t sure what to do.

The next day, Big Jim was again waiting at the Elm Road stop. Again he got on the bus and said, `Big Jim doesn`t pay.`  It happened this way every day for several days.  Mike continued to be unhappy about this situation. Jim could be dangerous. What would happen if Mike tried to make him pay? Then Mike had an idea. He started going to the gym. He lifted weights. He took a class in boxing. He started running every day for exercise. After a few weeks, Mike had become very fit and strong. He felt confident.

One day, Mike went to the bus station. As always, he started his bus and drove along his usual way.  For the first few stops, everything was normal. A few people got on the bus. He took their money and gave them their tickets. A few people got off the bus. Then, when Mike got to the bus stop on Elm Road, there was Big Jim, waiting for the bus as usual. The big man boarded the bus and, as always, said, `Big Jim doesn`t pay.`

Mike was ready. He knew what to do. He stood up. He looked Big Jim in the eye. He said, `Why doesn`t Big Jim pay?`

Big Jim had a surprised look on his face. Then he reached in his pocket, pulled out a small card, and said, `Because Big Jim has got a six-month bus pass.`

Seven Wonders of the World

Seven Wonders of the World are works of art and architecture regarded by ancient Greek and Roman observers as the most extraordinary structures of antiquity. Only one wonder of the seven, the pyramids of Egypt, still stands today.

  1. It was carved in the mid-5th century ВС by the Greek sculptor Phidias. The colossal statue was the central feature of the Temple at Olympia, where the Olympic Games were held. It was considered to be Phidias's masterpiece. The seated figure of the king of the Greek gods was 12 m in height and made of ivory and gold. An earthquake probably leveled the temple in the 6th century AD, and the statue was later taken to Constantinople, where a fire destroyed it.
  2. The lighthouse, built in about 280 ВС during the reign of Ptolemy II, stood more than 134 m tall — about as high as a 40-storey building. A fire was kept burning at its top to welcome sailors coming to the Egyptian land. Storms and an earthquake had damaged the lighthouse by 955 AD; an earthquake completely destroyed it during the 14th century.
  3. They consisted of several tiers of platform terraces built upon arches and extending to a great height. Accounts of their height range from about 24 m to a less reliable estimate of more than 90 m. Trees and colourful plants and flowers grew on the terraces, irrigated with water brought up from the Euphrates River.
  4. A huge bronze statue of the Greek sun god Helios was erected in about 280 ВС to guard the entrance to the harbor at Rhodes, a Greek island off the coast of Asia Minor. The statue stood about 32 m tall and according to legend, it straddled the harbor. An earthquake destroyed it in 224 ВС.
  5. Queen Artemisia built the tomb in memory of Mausolus, her brother and husband, in what is now southwestern Turkey. It was decorated by the leading sculptor of the age. An earthquake probably toppled the structure, and its materials were later used as building material. Only fragments remain of this tomb from which the word mausoleum derives.
  6. They were built on the west bank of the Nile River at Giza during the 4th Dynasty (about 2575 to about 2467 ВС). The oldest of the seven wonders, they are the only one remaining nearly intact today. Their white stone facing was later removed for use as building material in other places. According to the Greek historian Herodotus, ten years were required to prepare the site and 100,000 labourers worked thereafter for 20 years to complete the largest of them, which contains the king's tomb.
  7. An imposing temple in honour of the goddess of the hunt was built in what is now Turkey in the 6th century ВС and rebuilt after it burned in 356 ВС. Archaeologists estimate that the temple measured 104 m in length and 50 m in width. Its 127 stone columns stood more than 18 m tall. The temple was destroyed by the Goths in 262 AD.

ТЕКСТ 2

Speaker A. I have very little free time because of all my hobbies and other after-class activities. And I don't mind it, not at all! I'm interested in music and I play the guitar in our school band. I like sport and so I play basketball in the gym. I'm also interested in drama, and acting on the school stage is really cool! I come home in the evening and often I feel very tired, but I like that my life is full of different activities.

Speaker B. I like to study and that's why when the classes are over, you can always find me in the school library or in the park reading a book. You can actually call me a bookworm. I don't mind it because it is true. I like books and I like to learn something new every day. Of course I have favorite authors, but I'm also convinced that every book contains some interesting and useful information.

Speaker С I think that most of the girls of my age like to spend free time with their friends, going dancing or hanging out at the cafe. Well, I'm not an exception. I like parties and I really hate being forced to spend weekends at home, when my parents tell me to do so. That's so boring! Well, at least I can chat with my friends on the Internet or talk on the phone, but, of course, it's not enough!

Speaker D. When I was four, my father took me to the swimming pool and taught me to swim. Since then sport has been my life! I like to play football and I like to watch games on TV with my friends. I go to the gym every day to work out and I go swimming at least twice a week. I have a lot of friends, who share the same passion for sport, and it's fun to exercise together.

Speaker E. God bless the Internet! I'm so lucky I have an opportunity to do everything I want without leaving my room! Just think about it — I can chat with my friends, play games or even buy things online! I spend all of my free time in front of my PC and I don't regret it because there I have everything I need — my friends, good music, my favorite books and games. Isn't it cool?

You have 20 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 20 seconds.) Now you will listen to the dialogues again. (Repeat.) This is the end of the task. You now have 20 seconds to check your answers. (Pause 20 seconds.)

PART 1

READING

Time: 40 minutes (11 баллов)

Task 1. Read the text and decide if the statements (1-6) are true (T) or false (F).

Are you looking for a more interesting alternative to your weekly shop? Why not try one of the many farmers' markets which have sprung up all over the country? With a fine selection of the very freshest fruit and vegetables, as well as bread, cheese, meat and honey, these farmers' markets offer the shopper both variety and superior quality, as well as a pleasant change from a boring trip to the supermarket.

Farmers' markets have been popular in smaller towns for many years, and they also have a long tradition in parts of London. Even though the majority of people prefer shopping in large supermarkets, particularly on weekdays, shopping at local farmers' markets is becoming a more and more popular weekend activity. These markets offer a chance for farmers to sell fresh produce directly to the public. This direct contact with the producers gives customers the opportunity to ask questions about the produce they are buying. This is exactly what appeals to the city shoppers who frequent these markets-they want to know where their food comes from and how it is made. They are looking for fresh, high- quality produce from local suppliers, and an authentic taste of the country. However, it isn't only city folk who are benefiting from this boom in farmers' markets, as tourists are also keen to sample genuine UK produce such as organic sausages and home-made bread.

Edinburgh Farmers' Market is one of the most prestigious markets in the UK and has won many awards for its high-quality produce. It takes place every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., just below the impressive Edinburgh Castle, which provides a rather dramatic setting. Visitors to the market can find a wide variety of local products, including fresh seafood. There are even cookery demonstrations where you can learn how to really make the most of the delicious home-grown produce. Whether you are simply doing your weekly shopping, or looking for something special to buy, a visit to one of these farmers' markets is always an interesting experience.

  1. Most customers still like to do their shopping at supermarkets.
  2. Farmers’ markets are popular because the producer sells straight to the customer.
  3. Farmers’ markets give producers and customers a chance to discuss the products.
  4. Most shoppers at the markets don’t care about the origin of the produce.
  5. People from overseas also shop at the markets.
  6. Edinburgh has a monthly farmers’ market.

Dany Cotton:  Firefighter

People who think firefighting is a job for men would be surprised to learn that there are now over 230 women in the London Fire Brigade. One of these women is Dany Cotton, who has been with the fire service for more than 22 years.

Dany spends a lot of her time trying to change the image of the Fire Brigade. She recently took part in a national campaign promoting firefighting as a career for girls in secondary schools.

During the campaign, she explained that women do the same training and assessment as men and they are expected to do the same jobs. Both men and women must be fit and healthy, but as long as they pass the physical tests, height isn't important.

However, Dany's favourite question is this: How can a woman carry a man down a ladder from a building which is on fire?' She says that in all her years of firefighting, she has never seen anyone try this, although she was trained to do it. She describes this as something we only see in films and explains that today's firefighters enter a building as a team to rescue people.

Dany says that saving people from burning buildings is not the only thing that firefighters do. One of the most important jobs they do these days is in the community. Fire officers visit thousands of homes, businesses and schools each year giving advice that can often save lives. Women are often good at doing this because of their ability to communicate well.

Most of Dany's work in the Fire Brigade these days is as a manager in an office, but she still attends emergencies. One of the things she finds most interesting about her job is this combination of using her skills with people and working in real life emergency situations.

  3. have to be taller than female firefighters.

4           Female firefighters tend to be good at

  3. talking to the public.

5            Dany enjoys

  1. the danger of emergencies.
  2. the variety in her work.
