Hello ! We welcome you to London! Whatever your interests – the capital of Britain has something for you ! Every year hundreds of people come here ! It′ s worth visiting, to be sure.
Trafalgar Square Trafalgar Square is the centre of London. It was so named in memory of Admiral Nelson ' s great victory in the war against Napoleon. The statue of Admiral Nelson, Britain ‘ s national hero stands on the top of the colomn in the centre of the square. Trafalgar Square is a traditional place of mass meetings.
Buckingham Palace Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of the Queen. When the flag is flying on the top she is at home. It is a wonderful building. Visitors can watch the ceremony of Changing of the Guard in front of the palace.
The Houses of Parliament The Palace of Westminster ― the proper name for the Houses of Parliament ― was the king's palace for five hundred years. It is the most impressive building with beautiful towers. The Houses of Parliament is the seat of the British government.
Big Ben Big Ben is the biggest clock bell in Britain. It weighs 13 tons. Big Ben is one of the famous clocks in the world . Big Ben is the name given to the clock and the clock tower of the Houses of Parliament. The clock was named after Sir Benjamin Hall under whose direction it was made.
Westminster Abbey Westminster Abbey is an ancient church built in the 16th century. Now it is a museum. All kings and queens of Great Britain were crowned and buried there. Westminster Abbey is also famous for many outstanding people who were buried there : Newton, Darwin, Burns, Dickens are among them.
The Tower Bridge as a historical sight of London attracts a lot of tourists. It has two towers and stretches across the Thames River and makes the view of London more attractive.
. The Tower of London is a very old sight of the British capital. It was a fortress, a royal palace and later a prison. Now it is a museum and houses the Crown jewels and other treasures. The black ravens are another famous sight. There is a legend that the Tower will fall if it loses its ravens. Therefore the birds are carefully guarded. The Raven Master is the person who gives them food.
St.Paul's Cathedral St.Paul's Cathedral was designed by Christopher Wren. The most notable feature of it is the enormous dome. It took Wren 35 years to build the cathedral. St.Paul's Cathedral contains many fine paintings, sculptures, monuments and works of art.
The National Gallery The National Gallery is situated in Trafalgar Square and contains a great variety of real masterpieces of art and sculpture. They were brought from many other countries of the world. A lot of visitors come to the gallery to see its treasures and admire all the exhibits of the world famous collections.
The British Museum The British Museum is well known as one of the largest museums in the world. It is really a history museum. The collections of the museum are very rich. The British Museum houses now more than 7 million objects illustrating human history. One can see there Egyptian statues, sphinxes, mummies, Roman sculptures, drawings and paintings. The Museum has a rich library with copies of rare manuscripts.
