- Introduction.
Hallo, my students! How are you? I hope you are all right and ready to begin our lesson.
First, let me check who is present and who is absent.
Now tell me, please, have you ever been abroad?
And you could stay in different hotels. Did you reserve hotel rooms when you visited foreign countries?
What types of hotels were they?
- Phonetics. Now I want to say that the topic of our today’s lesson will be ‘Hotels. Reserving a hotel room’, and we are to listen to an interview, read texts, and do some lexical exercises and make up dialogues.

So, thank you. Now you have to read the text ‘Hotel types’ after which we’re going to do some exercises.
HOTEL TYPES
Hotel is a place where a traveller may find food and shelter. The best hotels have comfortable bedrooms, good facilities and accommodation. It should be as near to the centre of the town as possible. It should be located near the airport. The hotel may include a business centre.
There are several types of hotels.
- Luxury hotel provides facilities a wealthy guest may need. Usually it contains a business centre.
- Resort hotel is situated in a place where tourists like to stay, often near the sea, lake or in the mountains. Guests usually book it in advance.
- Commercial hotel is often located in the town centre and provides accommodation for businessmen.
- Congress hotel provides everything necessary for large meetings and conferences.
- Airport hotel provides accommodation for people who go to or come from other countries and usually stay for one night.
- Country house hotel provides comfortable but informal accommodation for people who want to relax in a quiet place.
- Guest house is intended for accommodation for holiday visitors or for long-stay guests.
- Motel is designed to provide a service to motorists.
- B&B is a small hotel that provides home-like accommodation at a low price and the morning meal for visitors. The letters B&B stand for "bed and breakfast".
The hotels may be: 5-star hotel, 4-star hotel, 3-star hotel, 2-star hotel and 1-star hotel.
- 5-star hotel offers the highest international standards.
- 4-star hotel provides a high standard of comfort and service. All bedrooms have a private bathroom/shower with lavatory.
- 3-star hotel includes two thirds of the bedrooms, which contain a private bathroom or shower with lavatory, fuller meal facilities are provided.
- 2-star hotel contains 20 per cent of bedrooms that have a private bathroom or shower with lavatory.
- 1-star hotel is generally small with good facilities. It is furnished well and has adequate bath and lavatory arrangements.

4. Listening.
Let’s book a hotel room now. Imagine we have chosen one for you in the centre of London. While we are waiting at the reception desk we can listen to the guest in front of us.
Студенты слушают CD-диск с записью диалога посетителя и администратора гостиницы 2 раза. После прослушивания диалога студенты выполняют ряд лексических упражнений, которые читаются и задаются диктором на CD-диске.
G: Good morning. I'd like to book a room in the hotel, please, for next month.
R: For next month? Um, for what date is it?
G: I think March 15 and 16.
R: One moment, please. I'll just check the availability.
G: Thank you. It's for one person.
R: For one person ... OK, that's no problem. We have plenty of rooms on that evening. Um, what type of room are you looking for?
G: Er, well, (a) single room, but with a double bed, rather than two twin beds.
R: Oh, that's fine. We have a single de luxe room which has a big double bed in. Our tariff for a single de luxe room would be £145, that's for one evening. That includes just, um, the room for one evening that includes service charge and VAT.
G: And then breakfast is on top, is it?
R: Yes, breakfast is on top of that charge. English breakfast is served at £9.25 and continental breakfast is £6.25.
G: Fine. What time can I check in on the evening of the 15th?
R: Evening of the 15th, check-in time is after 12 o'clock obviously, midday, yes.
G: And check out the following day - well, two days later - what time is check out?
R: Check out time is before 12 o'clock, ensuring that we can have the rooms in the afternoon for the guests arriving.
G: And you can accept all credit cards?
R: Yes, we accept all kinds of credit cards. How would you be paying?
G: It will be on Visa.
R: It will be on Visa. Can I guarantee this booking by Visa?
G: Yes, I'll give you my card now if you like.
R: OK. Thank you very much. Can I have the number?
G: Here you go.
R: OK, thank you. I'll just take an imprint of this. One moment please ... Thank you very much. Your reservation number is 15069, if you'd like to take that as a reference number for your reservation.
G: That is definitely guaranteed now?
R: That is guaranteed by your Visa card, yes.
G: Thank you very much. See you on the 15th.
R: OK, thank you very much.
Now you are to find the correct order of this dialogue.
R: Yes, we accept all kinds of credit cards. How would you be paying?
G: It will be on Visa.

G: Yes, I'll give you my card now if you like.

5. Writing.
Act as an interpreter. Translate the English phrases into Russian and the Russian phrases into English.
- Can you provide a night's accommodation?

- Yes. I've reserved a single room last week. My name's Mr. Green.
- Да, сэр. Ваша комната 400. Она тихая и спокойная.
- How much does it cost?
- $10 в сутки. Сколько времени вы пробудете в нашем отеле?
- Three days. Shall I pay in advance?
- Да. Зарегистрируйтесь, пожалуйста. Вот бланки. Заполните бланк печатными буквами. Напишите адрес, фамилию, профессию, продолжительность пребывания.

Great, you are all smart! Thank you for your work. And now you are to make up your own dialogues. Reconstruct the following situations into dialogues:
- You want to have a room reserved for a number of business men who come in two days and are going to stay at the hotel for a week.
- You want to have a room reserved for a friend of yours who wants to live in a single room with a bath.
- You are going to visit London. Make a room reservation in a hotel with the help of Hotel Accommodation Service by phone.
- You are going to leave the hotel.
Студенты в течение 10-15 минут составляют свои диалоги, которые впоследствии разыгрывают у доски.
6. Homework.
