As for the parties:

Now we begin the proceedings. Miss ___________, will you report about the appearance to the trial, please?
CLERK: Your Honour, all the witnesses have come to the hearing. They are expecting in the corridor:
JUDGE: Thank you. Lead the accused into the courtroom, please.
CLERK: Mrs. Mary Wyatt to the courtroom, please.
JUDGE: Mrs. Mary Wyatt, what can you tell us about doing shopping in Hall’s Department store on the 20th of February this year?
Lady Wyatt: On Wednesday morning I went to Hall’s Department store to do some shopping and to meet a friend of mine for lunch. In the Ladies’ Fashion department I bought a belt and a bag and paid for them. As I was waiting for the lift to go up to the rooftop coffee room, I saw a silk scarf that I liked. I looked around for a shop assistant to pay, but couldn’t see anybody. The lift came and as I was late for my appointment, I put the scarf with my purchases intending to pay for it later, on my way out. Unfortunately I forgot to pay and was stopped at the exit by the store detective. He asked me to go to the manager’s office where I was accused of having stolen the scarf. It’s quite ridiculous: I simply forgot to pay!
JUDGE: Now we are passing to the examination of the accused. The PROSECUTING COUNCEL, you’re welcome.
PROSECUTOR: Mr. Wyatt, make it clear again, please: when did you decide to pay for the scarf you liked?
L.W: On my way out, after we had lunch with my friend in the coffee room.
PROSECUTOR: Why didn’t you do it?
L.W: I forgot. At lunch my friend and me talked a lot, and I absolutely forgot about it.
PROSECUTOR: If you know about your light-mindedness, why didn’t you pay your purchase right away, that every decent customer must do?
L.W: I was ready to pay but the sales-girl was out.
PROSECUTOR: Mrs. Wyatt, have you ever suffered from the loss of memory before?
L.W: Never.
PROSECUTOR: Were you suffering from any disease at that time?
L.W: I’m examined by our family doctor Soames. He cures me of depression.
PROSECUTOR: What did he prescribe you at that time?
L.W: Some pills.
PROSECUTOR: How long have you been taking them?
L.W: For ten days.
PROSECUTOR: You didn’t suffer from the loss of memory at that time, did you?
L.W: No.
PROSECUTOR: And the last question: Have you ever stolen anything before?
Defense counsel: I object to the question.
JUDGE: The objection is overruled. Mrs. Accused, answer the question, please.
L.W: I’m too rich to do it.
PROSECUTOR: Yes or no?
L.W: No.
PROSECUTOR: No more questions, your Honour.
JUDGE: Thank you. Does the defense counsel have any questions?
DEFENCE COUNSEL: Thank you, your Honour. Lady Wyatt, please, tell the court about your financial position.
L.W: It’s rather stable. My husband, Mr. Wyatt has a private dairy factory. It’s a very profitable enterprise.
DEFENSE COUNSEL: Do you have to work?
L.W: No, I can afford to buy any thing I want.
DEFENSE COUNSEL: Are you a regular customer in the Hall’s department store?
L.W: Yes, I do most shopping there, because it’s not far from my home.
DEFENSE COUNSEL: What would you do, if you were stopped for a non-paid purchase/?
PROSECUTOR: I object to the question.
JUDGE: The objection is overruled. Answer the question.
L.W: For sure, I would return and pay for my purchase.
DEFENSE COUNSEL: Your Honour, I have no questions any more.
JUDGE: We are passing to interviewing of witnesses of the case. Call witness Bell, please.
CLERK: Mr. Bell is welcomed.
COURT REPORTER: Mr. Bell, raise your right hand and take an oath to tell the truth, and nothing but the truth.
BELL: I swear to tell the truth, and nothing but the truth.
JUDGE: Mr. Bell, say, how often shoplifting takes place in your store.
BELL: Practically, every week.
JUDGE: And as a rule, shoplifters are poor people, aren’t they?
BELL: Far from it! Sometimes among them there are people far from the poor.
JUDGE: Say everything you know about the shoplifting on the 20th of February this year. BELL: I was on duty on the second floor, when I noticed Lady Wyatt trying on a scarf. She looked at herself in the mirror, looked around several times and then put the scarf into her bag. She then went up in the lift to the top floor café, where she met a lady. I kept up my observation and when they left together, I followed them to the exit. Lady Wyatt had made no attempt to pay, so I stopped her and asked her to accompany me to the manager’s office.
JUDGE: Does the defending party have any questions?
DEFENSE COUNSEL: Your Honour, I have no questions
JUDGE: What about prosecuting party?
PROSECUTOR: Mr. Bell, Lady Wyatt followed you obediently?
BELL: No, she became abusive and refused to follow me until a policeman arrived to the scene.
PROSECUTOR: Your Honour, I have no more questions.
JUDGE: Thank you. Call witness Nora Wilton.
CLERK: Mrs. Nora Wilton is welcomed.
COURT REPORTER: Mrs. Wilton, raise your right hand and take an oath to tell the truth, and nothing but the truth.
NORA WILTON: I swear to tell the truth, and nothing but the truth.
JUDGE: Mrs. Wilton, answer, please, who you are to the accused?
WILTON: I am an old friend of Lady Wyatt. I’ve been the Wyatt family’s accountant for ten years. I have arranged to meet for lunch at 12 o’clock to discuss some family business matters. Our meeting took place.
JUDGE: Does the prosecuting party have any questions?
PROSECUTOR: Mrs. Wilton, tell the court, did you notice anything unusual about Lady Wyatt’s behavior?
WILTON: No, except that twice during the lunch she took a pill.
PROSECUTOR: What pills? What for?
WILTON: I don’t know. I didn’t ask her.
PROSECUTOR: Your Honour, I have no more questions. PROSECUTOR: PROSECUTOR:
JUDGE: What about the defending party?
DEFENSE COUNSEL: Mrs. Wilton, what do you think of the fact that Lady Wyatt is accused of shoplifting?
WILTON: I was astonished to know anyone could think that Lady Wyatt might steal. She is a very wealthy woman who can afford to buy any thing she wants.
DEFENSE COUNSE: No more questions, your Honour.
JUDGE: Call witness Soames, please.
CLERK: Mr. Jim Soames is welcomed.
COURT REPORTER: Mr. Soames, raise your right hand and take an oath to tell the truth, and nothing but the truth.
JIM SOAMES: I swear to tell the truth, and nothing but the truth.
JUDGE: Mr. Soames, what can you tell us about Lady Wyatt as your patient?
SOAMES: Lady Wyatt has been suffering from regular bouts of depression. At that time I marked just another one. So I prescribed her sedative pills for ten days.
JUDGE: Do these pills have any side effect?
SOAMES: Yes. They could cause erratic or unusual behavior. But I don’t know the case where moral judgment has ever been affected.
JUDGE: Thank you, Dr. SOAMES, you may take a seat in the courtroom.
Call witness Sandy Green.
CLERK: Ms. Sandy Green is welcomed.
COURT REPORTER: Ms. Sandy Green, raise your right hand and take an oath to tell the truth, and nothing but the truth.
SANDY GREEN: I swear to tell the truth, and nothing but the truth.
JUDGE: What can you say about shoplifting in Hall’s department store?
SANDY GREEN: Our store is very large. Every week it loses hundreds of pounds worth of goods because of shoplifting. That’s why I appointed Mr. Bell as a store detective. In him I have the greatest confidence.
JUDGE: Ms. Green, can you as a manager consider Lady Wyatt your regular customer?
SANDY GREEN: No, your Honour. The matter is that I’ve been in my present position only for 2 months.
JUDGE: Do the parties have any questions to the witness?
PROSECUTOR: Ms. Green, your shoplifters are all poor people?
SANDY GREEN: Not always. Among them there are not only poor members of society.
PROSECUTOR: No more questions, your Honour.
JUDGE: Thank you, Ms. Green, you may take a seat in the courtroom. Call witness Toad.
CLERK: Ms. Jane Toad is welcomed.
COURT REPORTER: Ms. Jane Toad, raise your right hand and take an oath to tell the truth, and nothing but the truth.
JANE TOAD: I swear to tell the truth, and nothing but the truth.
JUDGE: Miss Jane Toad, how long have you been working at the Hall’s department store?
JANE TOAD: for 7 years.
JUDGE: Can you consider Lady Wyatt your regular customer?
JANE TOAD: Yes, Lady Wyatt often visits our store.
JUDGE: Did she visit your store on the 20th of February Wednesday morning?
JANE TOAD: Yes, she did.
JUGDE: Did she buy anything?
JANE TOAD: Yes, and she paid by check.
JUDGE: Do the parties have any questions to the witness?
PROSECUTOR: Ms. Toad, say, on that day Lady Wyatt behaved normally?
JANE TOAD: I think, she did.
PROSECUTOR: Did you see Lady Wyatt trying on the scarf at the scarf counter?
JANE TOAD: No, I didn’t. On that day I was working at the shoe department. It is on the opposite side of the store. But I know that at the scarf department there were on duty two assistants, and neither of them left it.
PROSECUTOR: No more questions, your Honour.
JUDGE: Thank you, Ms. Toad, you may take a seat in the courtroom.
Now I close the hearing of the case! Mrs. Accused. You are offered to make the last speech.
L.W: I am not a shoplifter, believe me. I am rich enough to pay for this scarf. I simply forgot to do it. On that very day I took some pills from depression that caused absent-mindedness. Just believe me, please.
JUDGE: Ladies and gentlemen of the jury. I ask you to retire to the jury room to conduct the deliberation on the verdict over the case you have just heard. You must discuss it fully and fairly and bring in the verdict whether the accused is GUILTY or NON-GUILTY.
CLERK OF THE COURT: All rise, please: the Jurors are retiring to deliberate!
(JURY DELIBERATION)
CLERK OF THE COURT: All rise, please: the Jurors are coming.
JUDGE: Please, sit down. Ladies and gentlemen of the Jury! Are you ready to present the verdict?
FOREMAN: Yes, your Honour. We, the Jury of the above-heard case FOUND the defendant Mary Wyatt GUILTY of shop-lifting.
JUDGE: Thank you. Sit down, please. Ladies and gentlemen! You’re excused from the Jury. Thank you very much for your work.
На этом наш урок закончен. Всем спасибо за внимание.
