My Favorite word is… f Goal Makshanova Anna Sc h ool 176 Class 11-AСлайд 2
To begin with,… I have chosen this word because I think it has a very important meaning. Everyone should have his goal in life and try hard to achieve it. By setting goals person can improve his and other’s life and there is no need to refuse your goal if you consider it to be unachievable. Nowadays we can not imagine our life without some usual objects. But many years ago there were people who tried by hard to create them. For example, if Thomas Edison had given up his invention, we would have never seen a light bulb . Moreover the word ‘goal’ is used in sports as a term. A football match will not be so exciting without supporters shouting ‘goal!!!!’. All in all, that is why I believe that the word ‘goal’ is very important in English, besides it is used in many other languages for instance in Russian.

Goal is… Something that person hope to achieve (= aim, purpose, object). Method of scoring in many sports including football, hockey, lacrosse, water polo. a frame with a net into which football players must kick or hit the ball during a match to score a point . A place where someone wants to get (= Destination).

Etymology ‘Goal’ was descended from Old English word * gal which meant obstacle, barrier or marker. ‘Goal’ is also cognate with Albanian ngel (“to remain, linger, hesitate, get stuck ”). I suppose that sport term ‘goal’ is related to first meaning of this word, because when football player is trying to hit ball into gate he also has aim to get a score and win a match.
