Project «Child’s Memory never Die»
( devoted to my Granny)
In 2005 a wonderful book about our countrymen- the participants of Great Patriotic War was published to the 60th anniversary of Victory. It is called “The Pride of Nurlatsky Land”.
There are a lot of pages about the Heroes of that war. But the only page, which is called “Three Brothers – one Fortune” is especially precious to me, because it is devoted to my grandmother’s father and his two brothers.
The Efremovs brothers Aleksey, Sergey and Dmirtry were from the village of Egorkino. They joined the Soviet Army in the Siberia, where their family was exiled to. Aleksey ( my granny’s father ) and Sergey defended Leningrad. Unfortunately, they both bravely died there. The youngest brother Dmirtriy was killed in his first battle with the fascist. He was only 21 years old back then.
My grandmother’s mother, having got a funeral letter, didn’t marry again. She preferred to stay a widow because she loved her husband very much. She strongly believed she wouldn’t meet so helpful and caring person like Aleksey was.
My grandmother is still keeping as a relic two postcards, which her mother received from the front: “Greetings from the front. How do you do, my dear!”
My granny can’t help crying while reading this tiny, but very valuable postcard. It has got only several lines. She goes on reading it: ” Tomorrow we are attacking. I’m strongly sure I will come back home due to my love to you, my dear Nina and my children!”
After great Patriotic War my grandmother’s family came to Nurlat, because it was my great-grandfather’s Motherland. Every day trains from the front went through Nurlat. The winners were returning home to see their families. They were met by their relatives with flowers, tears and songs. My grandmother used to be among them. She was only 4 years old, but she can’t still forget those dreadful days.
“Every day I and my brother went to the railway station. When the soldier got off the carriage, we came up to him and asked:
“Aren’t you our Daddy?” Even strong soldiers couldn’t stand the sorrow in our childish eyes. They touched our heads and reassured us: ”Your father will definitely come back! Believe me! You must wait for him!”
Some years passed, but he didn’t return home. I never saw my father alive, never said this word “Daddy” .
Having told this story my Granny keeps silence for a long time. She goes on crying and I try to relieve her.
So, in this project I wanted to tell you about the invisible side of the war. It brought a lot of sufferings not only to the adults, but also to the helpless children. Their childhood was trampled under the enemies’ boots. The little girls, like my Granny, didn’t taste any sweets. They didn’t put their dolls into their beds, because they didn’t have any. They never sat on their fathers’ knees.
On 9th May -Victory Day- I often see my grandmother crying and putting flowers to the Unknown Soldier Monument. And a small thin girl with large eyes, asking “” What is it for?”will never disappear from my memory.
