Using songs in learning English.
Nowadays we can find and listen to some English songs. It’s not a secret that young people often listen to British and American singers. This fact can be very useful for our learning English.
Today people have to learn more and more and so they have to look for different ways of easy learning.
Aims:
1. Find some different ways of easy and enjoyable learning English.
2. Search impact of songs on people.
3. Explore people’s attitude to learning English with songs.
The song is a short poem or other set of words set to music or meant to be sung.
Songs have a better effect than speech on our memory, and music is one of the greatest ways of influence on people’s feelings. Scientists have proved that music influences on the left parencephalon, and lyrics influence on the right one.
So, why lyrics are easier to remember? Our brain is arranged so that separate words are difficult to remember. It needs a picture or association. Firstly, there is a plot in the song, painted with music and voice, so we have the association. Secondly, we remember just that we like.
That is why rhyme of the text and pleasant music has an effect on our memory. So, we can say that learning English with songs is one of the easiest and the most pleasant ways of learning.
Listening English songs we can hear real language. It is possible to mark out some advantages of the songs in learning English.
No more champagne
And the fireworks are through
Here we are, me and you
Feeling lost and feeling blue
It's the end of the party
And the morning seems so grey
So unlike yesterday
Now's the time for us to say...
This extract consists of several new phrases and words which become clear due to familiar words, so we can understand the sense and know some new words.
Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Suddenly, I'm not half to man I used to be,
There's a shadow hanging over me.
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.
There are lots of familiar words which we perfectly know, so this extract can help us learn how to describe some past events.
Everything at once.
As sly as a fox, as strong as an ox.
As fast as a hare, as brave as a bear.
As free as a bird, as neat as a word.
As quiet as a mouse, as big as a house.
This extract can help us understand comparatives better. We often compare something and the lyric of this song is a good example for us.
Into the woods.
I wish my son were not a fool.
I wish my house was not a mess.
I wish the cow was full of milk.
I wish the house was full of gold-
I wish a lot of things...
And this extract is very useful for understanding grammar structure with wish, which can be difficult for some pupils, so we would say that it’s very easy example.
Dancing pairs, painted wings
Things I almost remember
And a song someone sings
Once upon a December
The singer’s voice is very powerful and we think that her pronunciation is perfect. She clear pronounces each sound, and it’s very useful to listen to the songs like this to improve our pronunciation.
In addition, if we like the melody, we begin to listen words more attentively, trying to understand the sense of the song and after several listening we can translate the text. But of course if we have very good and deep vocabulary.
