«Что для меня значит 75-летие Победы?»
Грязи, 2020 г.
There was a war long ago,
But the memory is given to us,
To remember how the whole world burned once.
And those who are twenty years old,
Let them know that
soldiers, soldiers, soldiers are looking after them.
L. Derbenev
It's no exaggeration to say that the main elements of nature on the vast territory of our glorious Fatherland are marked with incredible feats of brave and undaunted Russian people. From childhood we know about great deeds of native Russian “superheroes” – epic giants who protected our land. At school from textbooks on history we learn about great historic events, such as the Battle on the Ice, the Battle of Kulikovo, the Battle of Borodino and so on. But the victory of Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945 proved that the Soviet Union was the First, the Best that stopped fascism striving for world domination and made other states respect the national Russian character. Moreover, our victory encouraged other nations to fight for their independence.
The Great Patriotic war touched each family in the former Soviet Union, anyway. Although it ended long ago we have silent testimonies of the bloodiest armed conflict in human history reflected in monuments, historic documents, photos, diaries, different works of fiction and art. Therefore, it makes me think about what the victory means for each person of our country and for me personally. So, for me the 75th anniversary of Victory is a memory of my great-grandfathers, one of which fought in a partisan detachment in the Ukrainian forests, the other went through the entire war in the Red Army and returned home disabled. For the sake of their memory, their heroism and bravery, I participated in the largest action – "Immortal Regiment" 2020, which was organized in the form of an improvised procession on the Internet, where everyone posted photos of their dear relatives, veterans of the Great Patriotic War.
The celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Victory opened me new heroic milestones and names in the history of the Great Patriotic War. The deepest revelation for me was the feat of 17-18-year-old boys, cadets from the Infantry and artillery school in the city of Podolsk. A combined unit of 3,500 cadets with rifles, grenades and old-time cannons, guns from the Russian-Turkish War of 1877-1878, was sent to the front line near the Warsaw highway. There, the Junkers had to hold out from 6 to 13 October 1941 to stay the advance of the fascist divisions with hundreds of tanks and bombers. In five days of bloody fighting, the Germans managed to advance only 300 meters towards Moscow. The Wehrmacht generals were furious. "Red Junkers" broke all their offensive plans. 18-year-old boys not only managed to hold out longer than necessary, but also destroyed during the fighting about 100 tanks and eliminated more than 5,000 soldiers and officers of the enemy army. In the battles at the Ilyinsky line, only one in ten of the 3,500 fighters of the consolidated Podolsk detachment survived. On October 25, 1941, the remaining cadets were transferred to the rear and sent to the city of Ivanovo to complete their training.
Now I am at the same age as those boys were. I live because of their courage, thanks to their great desire to live in a free country! Thanks to everyone who fought the enemy, fought at the front, destroyed the fascist aggressors! Dying for us, they won over death, as they gave us peaceful sky, the opportunity to live, enjoy the life, and love! They gave us the happiness to live in the future!
Reflecting on the harsh, merciless days and nights of 1941-1945 for Soviet people, I would like to express my feelings and emotions about the incredible willpower of my countrymen, their strength of spirit and confidence in victory. First of all, I would like to stress that I am proud of the united Soviet people. It was a real unity in diversity. The fact is that the victory was won not by one person, but by the people of different nationalities, different religions, social status, ages and skin colours. The country became a cohesive military camp and everyone said “We will win, not I’ll”. It was the Soviet soldier who managed to show the best features of his/her national character in the war: selflessness, fearlessness, military valor. Throughout all the years of the war, the soldiers did not forget about humanity, demonstrating a sense of camaraderie, friendship, protecting each other at the cost of their own lives. I think, they are living examples for us who often forget that our achievements depend on help and support of our nearest and dearest (I mean friends, relatives, groupmates, neighbours). With the collapse of the Soviet Union we stopped tolerating people of other nationalities and it may cause the weakening of our country, indeed.
Secondly, there is always the age-old question of who makes history: people or personalities. In this context, I can’t stand mentioning that the victory was won by people under the skillful strategic and tactical leadership of our outstanding military leaders. I admire their professionalism and competence in ensuring the proper conduct of military operations. They showed an example of caring attitude to their homeland and its people.
And thirdly, I strongly believe that we were not able to win in that war without the greatest contribution of homefront workers who were terribly hungry and cold, lost their relatives, some of them were younger than me, but they didn’t give up. They kept doing their best to forge the victory and happy future for next generations!
The Great Patriotic war claimed the lives of about 27 million innocent people. If a minute of silence is declared for each of the victims, the country will dumb for half a century.
The cannonades were suffocated,
The world was silent.
On the mainland once
The war ended.
We will see the dawns again,
Will believe and love.
Just don't forget it,
Just don't forget.
People, believe,
The whole world needs this memory.
If we forget the war,
War will come again.
