I live in Kalmyk republic which lies in the steppe area of Russia. Kalmykia is bounted by Rostov, Volgograd, Astrahan, Stavropol regions and by the Dagestan republic. There are only 3 towns in Kalmykia : Elista, Lagan, Gorodovikovsk and many large and small villages.

The capital of Kalmykia is Elista. It is very important in the life of the whole republic because it is not only political but economic, cultural and transport centre of Kalmykia. Great changes are taking place now in Elista. People of Elista want t heir town to be gr ее n and every spring trees and flowers are planted near their houses and offices. The centre of the town is the old part of it. But the oldest street is “krasnaya” is Russian, it means not only red colour, but it has also a meaning “beautiful’. The main reason why the street was called “Krasnaya” is that a brick plant was situated there long ago. It produced bricks of red colour and because of imperfect eguipment on this plant, red dust covered the street. Judging by the word we can say that both Kalmyk and Russian people were the fist who founded this town.

Elista is situated in the south-east of Europe, 1,876 kilometers to the south-east of Moscow. It is the cultural, economic and political center of Kalmykia. It is population is 112.7 thousand people and territory is 21thousand hectares (the data of January 1,2002). Paustovsky wrote in 1932, « Elista is a mirage in the steppes which is materialized. It is white in colour and bright with windows shining as mirrors and very striking in these virgin steppes ».

« The Exodus and Return » memorial. Architects, S. Kurneyev, sculptor, Ernest Neizvestny. The sculpture of 2.74 m in height, 5.33m in length and 2.21m in width cast of cast of bronze in New York was opened on December 29, 1996.

Echo. Sculptor, N. Yevseyeva. 1996 Bronze, 3.5m in height. The sculpture symbolizes the link between the past, present and future generations. The sitting man is gentry holding the Kalmyk dombra, the symbol of infinite space, open-heartedness of the people and sensitivity to the surrounding world, and it is sound like culture will not disappear till the Kalmyk people is spirit is alive.

Kurneyev. 1990 In 1908 Nomto Ochirov recorded a number of songs from the Kalmyk heroic epic « Djangar » performed by the great djangarchy and thus saved them for his people and mankind.
