We live in Kalmyk republic lies in the steppe area of Russia. Kalmykia is bounted by Rostov, Volgograd, Astrahan , Stavropol regions and by the Dagestan republic. Kalmyk republic is washed by the Kaspian Sea from the east. The territory of out republic is devided into 13 regions. There are only 3 towns in Kalmykia : Elista , Lagan, Gorodovikovsk and many large and small villages. The population of Kalmykia is more than 350000.People of many nationalities live in Kalmykia, they speak different languages. Kalmykia is an agricultural republic. The farmers grow wheat, rise, maize, oats, sunflowers, rue, barley, vegetables and fruit in the fields and gardens. Republic is famous for its cattle-breeding and sheep-breeding. The farmers produce meat, milk, wool, fur, raw leather not only for own republic but send them to the other regions too.

Gas and oil industries are being rapidly developed. Kalmykia is rich in natural resources, but it is rather poor in goods, that’s why our government is now finding measures to develop its own processing industry. The capital of Kalmykia is Elista. It is very important in the life of the whole republic because it is not only political but economic, cultural and transport centre of Kalmykia.

Camel Kalmyk camels-are big, strong, graceful animals with the weight reaching 1200 kg. These magnificent animals can pass more than 50 km a day in searching for better pastures. Camel as a ship of desert has lost its actuality but it is distinguished by high capacity for work and for giving milk, meat and wool. Its proud and staid look is a nostalgic symbol of good nomadic old times.

Horse The Kalmyk are famous cattle-breeders in the past. To steppe inhabitants a horse has always been a loyal friend. A steppeman and a horse was an indissoluble duet in the past. Swift running herd is still an integral part of steppe's scenery.

Saiga Saiga came to our time from the era of mammoths. Kalmyk saiga is the only kind of steppe antelopes living in Europe. The scientists of Kalmykia are running the unique experiment on raising saigas in captivity. The success of the experiment let us hope that these graceful creatures will always inhabit the Kalmyk steppe.

Gopher It is a small furry animal. It has a short tail and lives in holes that it digs in the ground. It is difficult to snap a gopher at a short distance. They are easily scared and very swift. They live in colonies and whistle to warn each other of danger. It is notable that these rodents can stay in hibernation up to eight months. By popular belief the gopher brings news of spring. It opens its stores and lets warmth and light go out and so spring begins.
