Dear grandfather Peter,
Your grandson Andrey Kalinin is writing to you from the distant future.
First of all, I want to tell you that for me May 9 is the most exciting holiday. Every year with the whole family we go to the parade, participate in the procession of the Immortal Regiment. On Victory Day a lot of people gather on Lenin square with photos of their relatives participated in the World War II. The eyes of every person express gratitude to them because they saved our country and the whole world from fascism.
The war ... It is a test for all mankind. This word keeps a lot of sorrowful memories, tears, ruins and death. I would like to ask you, grandpa, how you defended our Motherland and what you felt. Dad told me that you were a commander of a medical battalion during the Great Patriotic War, carried out wounded fighters from battlefields, provided first aid and then sent them to medical units. With particular proud and interest I listened to the story about the battle of Rzhev where you took part in. I read that very few of thousands of Soviet soldiers survived there.
As for me, I know what war is from family stories, military awards, triangle letters and funeral messages, from black-and-white photographs and other things that are carefully stored in our house. Hearing the memories of you I was surprised because my grandmother, dad and mom are doctors too. The dynasty of doctors! You know, grandpa. I decided to become a doctor like you and want to continue the business of our family. I will do my best to become worthy of your professional and civil deed.
Grandpa, I think we must keep the memory about every Soviet soldier who defended life of their children, nearest and dearest, who gave peace to our country, who liberated people of other countries from enemies. They are an example of devotion and bravery for all of us!
This year we will celebrate the 75-th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War. Grandpa Peter, we are happy to live under the peaceful sky thanks to your courage, professionalism and heroism. Our family will always be proud of you and remember you. As for me, I am sure that it’s never late to tell thank you, my dear grandpa, for victory, for peace, for holiday!
Your grandson Andrey
