Neftegorsk — destroyed by the earthquake, the urban-type settlement in Okha district of Sakhalin region. The village was located 98 km South of Okha city. There lived mostly oil workers and their families. At the night of 28 may 1995 at 1:04am by local time in Sakhalin, an earthquake measuring around 9 (according to seismologists — not over 7.2) points happened. The village was completely destroyed, under the rubble of buildings were killed 2040 people which was the most part of the total population in 3197 people. That's when rescuers first used the "5 minutes of silence" during each hour, when all the equipment was frozen, stopped all work and conversations. Head of laboratory of the Institute of the lithosphere George Coffey said that the disaster could not resist those 17 modular homes that were not designed for earthquake-prone areas. In Neftegorsk the houses crumbled completely, this case was not even spotted in Spitak in 1988. T hey suggested that those houses were built to reduce the cost of construction. As a result extracted from the rubble stayed alive mostly residents from upper floors, and all residents from lower floors became victims of the economy, conducted in the 1960-ies. After the earthquake, the village was not restored in its place there was built the memorial complex and chapel, located near the cemetery where the dead were buried.
