Introduction
Different countries have different systems of education. If you compare them, you can find many similarities and differences. I noticed that Hogwarts has many features of a typical British school. That’s why I was interested in the education system in England, as in the English lessons we learned a lot about this country. Several years ago I was interested in reading books by a famous writer John.To.Rowling "Harry Potter". These series of books captivated not only me but the whole world. Therefore, wonderful films were based and created on this book.
The purpose of the project is to compare Hogwarts with an English school and to find out if the school of Hogwarts can be an example of a typical British school.
The main aims:
The hypothesis of the research is that, if you read the book “Harry Potter”, you can get the idea of typical the British school and find out some features of a typical British school.
Hogwarts as a wizard school
School of Witchcraft and Wizardry Hogwarts is the school of wizards living in the UK and Ireland. Hogwarts is the only school of magic in the UK and Ireland. It accepts children from the age of 11 years possessing magical powers. The number of students at Hogwarts is not precisely known, but overall, the school serves approximately 280 children. The training lasts 7 years. At the end of each year they pass examinations, but the examinations at the end of the fifth and seventh years (the OWL and the TOAD) are especially important for the future of the students
In Russian translation the years of training are called courses (first course, second course). Respectively, students of different years are referred to as freshmen, sophomores, and so on.
The schooling is free, students normally buy for books and school supplies them yourselves. However, there is a special Fund for the purchase of textbooks and school supplies to students in need.
The base school. Hogwarts was founded around the X century by four mighty wizards: Godric the Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin with a Ravenclaw Candida and Penelope Puffenduya. The founders built a magic school and took all children with magical abilities, which was opposed by a Slytherin — he believed that the school is not the place lagorodnyi. The founders decided to distribute to his students at different abilities and characters, so the school formed four faculties — this tradition lives on in school today.
The location of the castle. The school is located in a historical eight-story castle in Scotland. On school property, except the castle, there is a mountain lake, a large forest; called the "Forbidden Forest" because of living there dangerous creatures, greenhouses, and several support buildings and a field for playing Quidditch. The castle is surrounded by mountains.
Curriculum. All the subjects studied in school are somehow connected with magic. With the exception of astronomy, none of the subject is not taught in regular schools, although there are similar (potions instead of chemistry, history of
Magic instead of history, numerology instead of mathematics, travelogia instead of botany, care of magical creatures instead of Zoology). Of special note is the study of astronomy, because such a thing is in Muggle schools.
There are seven compulsory subjects:
• Potions
• History of magic
• Transfiguration
• Spells
• Astronomy
• Travelogia
• Defense against the dark arts
All these items are mandatory from the first to the fifth year. Starting from the third year, pupils, along with the obligatory, optional subjects are offered:
• Divination
• Care of magical creatures
• Ancient runes
• Maglavera
• Numerology
The Hogwarts students can also study the transgression, but teaching is not one of the teachers, and officials of the Ministry of Magic.
Exams and evaluation. In the classroom evaluation of each student are exhibited on a scale and either awarded or taken away by the teacher in the event of an unsatisfactory response. Each point fills or empties the hourglass of the faculty, which has a particular student. Practically, individual student progress is monitored and the teacher is not mentioned anywhere in the logs and summary sheets of evaluations. Personal student progress is monitored only by means of exams that students take at the end of each year. The most important of them — the OWL and the TOAD.
At the end of fifth year there are exams in all subjects called OWLS — Super Excellent Magic (as there are other translations of the abbreviations
Standardized Level Wizards, Standards of Learning Magic; in the original OWLs — Ordinary Wizarding Levels). The exams OWLS have the following estimates:
A positive assessment
• O = Outstanding (N = Excellent)
• E = Exceeds Expectations (= Higher than expected)
• A = Acceptable (= Satisfactory)
Negative rating
• P = Poor (=Poor)
• D = Dreadful (= Disgusting)
• T = Troll (Troll. This assessment at first it seemed a joke Fred and George Weasley, but then turned out to be true).
Maximum possible score of 12 points. The exam is administered by professors and members of the Magical examination Committee.
To continue studies on the subject need to get a rating of A (Satisfactory), though some teachers require E (Higher than expected) and even O (Excellent). Some students who received low scores continued in the last two years of school at the level of the SOV.
After the seventh course students sit the examinations TOAD — Terribly Brilliant Academic Certification (in other translations SPIDER — Petrodata Certification Skills of a Sorcerer and TRITON — Typically Solvable Exhausting Test, the original NEWT — Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests). The rating system on the TOAD is the same as the OWLS.
After putting TOAD the graduates find work. For many occupations or positions in eligibility requirements included a level grades in certain subjects in the examinations of the OWL and the TOAD. Also for mrcobra or other activity specific activity must undergo special training and pass additional tests and exams.
After the seventh course students sit the examinations at the TOAD
Faculties:
• Gryffindor, for the noble and the brave, founder Godric Gryffindor
• Puffenduya for hardworking and honest, founder of Penelope Puffenduya
• Ravenclaw — the wise and intelligent founder of Rowena Ravenclaw
• Slytherin is for the ambitious and cunning, the founder Salazar Slytherin
Dean — one of the teachers of Hogwarts, who had studied in the past in their Department. By the beginning of the action, the Dean of Slytherin — Severus Snape, Professor of potions; Dean of Gryffindor — Minerva McGonagall, Professor of Transfiguration; Dean Puffenduya — the Pomona sprout, Professor of travelogue; Dean Ravenclaw — Filius Flitwick, Professor of spells.
School uniform. During classes the students are required to wear gowns in black color and optionally the cone-shaped hats with brims. On the breast of each
Mantle should be embroidered with the emblem of the faculty (apparently, appears magically after the distribution). In the films about Harry Potter, pupils wear ties (in the room) and scarves (in the winter on the street), as part of the school uniform. These clothing items are painted in stripes of colors of the faculties of
• Gryffindor — red and gold
• Ravenclaw — blue and bronze (in the films white)
• Puffenduya — yellow and black
• Slytherin — green and silver (white scarves)
Also on special occasions students wearing ceremonial robes. No indication in appearance of the front of the robes does not exist. Faculty insignia on them are also missing.
For individual pupils there are certain sings. So, the head of the faculties is worn on his chest, with embroidered emblem, icons, and sometimes a special hat.
School spirit
The Slogan Of Hogwarts
The motto of Hogwarts is "Draco dormiens numquam titillandus," which in Latin means: "don't tickle a sleeping dragon".
Hymn Of Hogwarts
Hogwarts, Hogwarts, our beloved Hogwarts
Teach us anything.
Young and old, bald and shaggy,
After all, age is not important, important is only the essence.
In our heads now the wind howled,
They are empty and dull, and heaps of dead flies,
But knowledge place in them will always be
So teach us anything.
If I forget, you better remind us,
And if you do not know, you tell

The system of education in the school of magic Hogwarts is very similar to the model of British schools.
Training period
In England the training lasts 11 years. Primary school 5 to 11 years. The next stage of secondary school children are from 11 to 16 years.
Exams and grading system
In turn, schooling in England is divided into 4 steps – the so-called Key Stages:
Key Stage 1: from 5 to 7 years
Key Stage 2: 7 to 11 years
Key Stage 3: 11 to 14 years
Key Stage 4: 14 to 16 years
The first two stages belong to the elementary school and the last two to the middle one. At the end of each stage, students take final exams.
These exams on the final GCSE certificate, which stands for General Certificate of Secondary Education (General certificate of secondary education) are a key moment in a child's life that will largely determine his fate. Immediately after passing GSCEs students have the choice to continue their education with a further goal to go to College or finish school and go to work. However, the opportunity to continue their education and go to University is not for everyone, but only for those lucky ones who will pass GSCEs for high scores: typically, students take from 7 to 12 items, of which at least 5 should be with grades ranging from A* to C.
Further education: Sixth form and a-levels exams
Further stage of education is called "sixth form" or "college". At the end of this phase, which usually takes 2 years, students take another exam – as a rule, is an academic A-levels (short for "Advanced level qualifications") which can hardly be called an analogue of the Russian unified state exam. There are also equivalent training in the field of vocational education, such as GNVQ's or s BTEC'. However, when choosing a specific University and course of study should consult the entrance requirements – the fact that some universities accept only the results of A-levels.
School pupils in the UK receive the mark. However, the estimates differ. The school pupils put two scores.
The first rating is for the knowledge, quality of material preparation, the correctness of the answer. Evaluation is by letter from A to U. There is also a grade A* — put it in rare occasions for outstanding achievement.
• A* — Excellent work, shows the high ability and developed imagination.
• A — Excellent. The student understands the subject and attentive to detail.
• B — Good. Work performed at a decent level, mostly error.
• C — Satisfactory. A little not up to the required level of knowledge.
• D — Unsatisfactory work. Lots of errors, inaccuracies. A child may be unable to cope with discipline.
• U — Extremely low result. Put in rare cases.
The second assessment is put for zeal in study, a number from 1 to 5. For good grades for hard work the pupil should behave in the lesson actively: ask questions, join in discussions, even to criticize the point of view of the teacher.
• 1 — the Student works hard, shows interest in learning and expresses the leadership position.
• 2 — Very good job on the lesson. Child takes full advantage of the ability.
• 3 — Satisfactory. The student meets the requirements, but the lesson behaves passively.
• 4 — the Child does not show initiative. It does work, only if he asks and helps him.
• 5 — Very bad, the student shows no interest in learning, fails to meet the deadlines or does not work at all.
Holidays
The British school year is divided into three parts — terms, holidays between trimesters long, usually two weeks, and short, one week, in the middle of the trimester, approximately every two months.
School uniform
In all English schools children wear uniform. At each school, both private and public, they have their own uniform. You might notice one common thread – English students have school clothes in the classical style. The main element is always the emblem of the institution, which is placed on different items of clothing – ties, suits, caps.
Conclusion
In my research work I proved the hypothesis that Hogwarts has the features of the typical British School.
Having studied the education system in England and the system of Hogwarts, I have identified common features and understood that the magic school of Hogwarts can also be the model of British schools.
If you want to compare British school and Hogwarts I recommend to read the book «Harry Potter».
