The topicality:  “Homonyms in English and their classification” characterized by the following: The actuality of this work caused by several important points. We seem to say that the appearance of new, homonymic meanings is one of the main trends in development of Modern English, especially in its colloquial layer, which, in its turn at high degree is supported by development of modern informational technologies and simplification of alive speech.

The aim of the research : to study the phenomenon of English homonyms thoroughly and to present different classifications of homonyms which are known in modern Lexicology.

The method of the research : to present general description of homonyms.
– to find out the origin of English homonyms.
– to study different classifications of English homonyms made by famous lexicologists.
– to learn Modern methods of investigating homonyms.

The object of the present research is the phenomena of homonyms in Modern Lexicology. The subject of the research is the criteria of English homonyms.
       The practical significance of our work can be singled out as the following points:
– English-speaking people can use our research to master their language with the help of English homonyms.

– People can elaborate their own point of view on the problem of English homonymy and do some other research works on this issue

As a result of the research therefore, is that in dichromatic treatment the only rigorous criterion is that of etymology observed in explanatory dictionaries of the English language where words are separated according to their origin. The opposite process of morphemic addition can also result in homonymy.
